The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has taken disciplinary action against an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI II) after a video surfaced online allegedly showing the officer soliciting a bribe from a traveller. The suspension was announced by NIS Comptroller General, Kemi Nandap, in a statement released by the Service Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Udo, on Thursday in Abuja.
Nandap expressed strong disapproval of the officer’s behavior, noting that it falls short of the professional values and ethics upheld by the NIS. She emphasized that such conduct undermines the ongoing reforms aimed at improving service standards within the organization.
“The officer has been indefinitely suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures, in accordance with the law and Public Service Rules,” Nandap stated.
The video, titled “This is how immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria,” has been widely circulated on social media, sparking outrage and concern over the integrity of the NIS. In response, Nandap reiterated the NIS’s commitment to rooting out corrupt practices within its ranks and reaffirmed the agency’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption.
To prevent future incidents, Nandap highlighted that electronic gates (e-gates) are being installed at all international airports across Nigeria. These measures are part of the broader efforts to enhance travel experiences and align with the Federal Government’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’
Nandap also encouraged the public to report any instances of misconduct or corruption involving NIS officers to the appropriate authorities, as the Service continues to strive for excellence in its operations.
