The Nnewi-Owerri road has seen a major transformation as the Anambra State government, under the leadership of Governor Charles Soludo, commenced the demolition of illegal structures in a bid to expand and upgrade the road network in the area. The operation, which is a critical part of the dualisation project of the Ekwulobia-Nnewi-Ihiala road, is aimed at easing traffic congestion and fostering economic growth in this industrial heartland of Anambra.
The exercise, conducted under the supervision of Nzuko Ora Nnewi President, Maduka Atueyi, saw teams clearing structures encroaching on the road’s right of way. This demolition is part of Governor Soludo’s broader urban renewal initiative, designed to modernize infrastructure across Anambra State and improve road safety and accessibility.
Residents and business owners along the affected routes have been notified in advance about the state’s intentions, and many have expressed mixed feelings about the development. While some expressed concerns over the impact on their businesses, many others believe the initiative will benefit the community in the long run by reducing travel time, attracting investors, and enhancing the aesthetics of Nnewi.
The dualisation of the Ekwulobia-Nnewi-Ihiala road is expected to significantly improve transportation in the state, creating a more efficient and safer route connecting key economic areas. It marks a bold step towards realizing Governor Soludo’s vision of transforming Anambra into a competitive economy with world-class infrastructure.
Speaking on the progress, President Maduka Atueyi of Nzuko Ora Nnewi, the town’s apex socio-cultural organization, stated, “This project aligns with the dreams of many Nnewi residents who have long advocated for improved road networks. We are committed to ensuring the smooth execution of this work for the benefit of all residents. This is why we said no opposition in Nnewi, so we can be able to attract the dividend of APGA government to Nnewi”
As demolition efforts continue, the state government assures that fair compensation will be provided for affected property owners and has pledged to work closely with local communities to minimize disruptions.
