The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has condemned the recent attack on the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajero, expressing concern over the ongoing nationwide strike led by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and NLC. In a statement issued by Zakari Mijinyawa, the Head of the Strategic Communication Office of the NSA, it was revealed that some suspects had been arrested in connection with the assault on Joe Ajero.

The statement emphasized the NSA’s worry about the potential impact of the strike on the livelihood of ordinary Nigerians and its implications for economic security and other strategic national interests. Nuhu Ribadu intervened following the assault on Joe Ajero in Owerri, Imo State, stating that the attack went against the principles of freedom of association and expression.

The NSA assured the public that a thorough investigation was underway, with some arrests already made. The outcome of the investigation will be disclosed to the public once concluded. The federal government, through the Office of the NSA, appealed to the leadership of the labour unions to call off the strike and allow the ongoing dialogue process to be exhausted.

The call for the strike to be rescinded comes amid the government’s commitment to addressing the assault on the NLC President and ensuring that the rule of law is upheld. The statement affirmed the government’s stance against such acts and emphasized its dedication to maintaining the principles of freedom of association and expression.
