UPDATE: Gov Mbah Salutes Army For Improved Security, Peace In Enugu

The Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, sued the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) over his contentious discharge certificate, and the NYSC has responded.

They provided the court with documentary evidence supporting its contention that it did not issue the certificate Mbah was in possession of.

The release certificate that Governor Mbah claimed was issued to him was not from the NYSC, according to the statement given by Mrs. Rhoda Dawa, the NYSC’s Assistant Director in the Corps Certification Department, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The documents submitted by the NYSC to the Court include the alleged forged certificate Mbah submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, a photocopy of the original copy of the certificate that was to be issued to Mbah, a date sheet showing where discharged corps members signed for their certificates, another data sheet with the names of unclaimed certificates, official circulars authorising the destruction of unclaimed certificates, photographs of the incineration of the unclaimed discharge certificates, samples of the NYSC discharge certificates during the period the Governor was supposed to have performed his compulsory national service, Police and Directorate of State Services letters of investigation, among others.

Governor Mbah asserted in court documents that he finished his national youth service and received a discharge certificate.

Remember how the Governor sued the NYSC in court for N20 billion, alleging conspiracy, fraud, and factual misrepresentation.

Mbah further requests that the court rule that he participated in the NYSC program for a full year using a call-up letter with the call-up number FRN/2001/800351 and the Lagos code LA/01/1532, in addition to awarding him N20 billion in damages.

Additionally, he claimed that the declaration needed to mention that he received a certificate of national service with the number A808297 after completing his service year in 2003.

The NYSC argued in its deposition that the governor of Enugu State did not finish his service year and that the organization did not issue the certificate of discharge he displayed.

The Enugu governor’s discharge certificate has the serial number A808297, whereas the certificate the NYSC prepared for Mbah but which he did not collect has the serial number 673517, supporting its claim with the data sheet where Mbah was to have signed and collected his discharge certificate.

The NYSC cited the calligraphic writing on Mbah’s certificate and said that the writing style on the certificate for the governor was unique compared to all other certificates provided to discharged corps members during his batch. This appears to be forensic proof.

The corps directorate claimed that Mbah’s certificate could not be different from that of the other corps members who graduated during the same time period, despite the fact that all certificates were calligraphed by the same individual, who was employed by the corps directorate.

Contrary to Mbah’s assertion that his likely date of discharge was September 15, 2002, the NYSC further noted that his likely date of discharge after completing his course work at the Nigerian Law School was September 15, 2003.

In addition, it was claimed that Peter Mbah did not receive a discharge certificate from the NYSC because he did not complete his service year despite being mobilized for it. The discharge certificate that had been prepared for him was later returned to the NYSC headquarters where it was destroyed in the presence of security personnel along with other unclaimed certificates.

“The 1” Respondent’s (NYSC) National Directorate Headquarters issued the Certificates for the Members of the Service Corps in Lagos State, including the Certificate of the Applicant, using a Certificate Issuance Register. The register indicated the basic data of the Members of the Service Corps, including their State Code, name, Call-Up Number, and Certificate Number in serial form. A copy of the relevant page of the Certificate Issuance Register at the National Directorate Headquarters, showing the Applicant in asterisks with Certificate Number 673517, is attached herewith and marked as Exhibit ‘NYSC 5’.

“Following the 1″ Respondent’s Top Management’s directive on August 18 2021, all the outdated, unused, and cancelled Certificates of National Service and Certificates of Exemption, Certificates of absconded Members of the Service Corps, including the Applicant’s Certificate Number A673517 which he was not available to collect, have been disposed of by incineration,” the NYSC said in its deposition.
