Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s nominee for president, has expressed his sorrow at the passing of elder statesman and Air Commodore Dan Suleiman (retd), who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 80.
Between July 1975 and March 1976, Suleiman served on General Murtala Muhammad’s Supreme Military Council. From March 1976 to July 1978, he served as Plateau State’s military ruler.
Suleiman assumed the chairmanship of the Middle Belt Forum in 1999, following the restoration of democracy. He was also a founding member of NADECO, the National Democratic Coalition.
In expressing his sorrow at his departure, Obi characterised the older statesman as a seasoned, conscientious, and perceptive politician and added that Nigerians will much miss him.
He said, “It is with a deep sense of sadness that I received the sad news of the passing on, of Commodore Dan Suleiman. He was a very respected, experienced, diligent and discerning politician who added great value to any enterprise he was engaged in.

“Commodore Dan was an engaging elder statesman and a diligent leader, who served Nigeria and the Middle belt region selflessly and diligently. The death of the Commodore is a huge loss to the entire Suleiman Family, the Middle belt and to Nigerians in general.
“On behalf of my family, I commiserate with his family and all who mourn him. May God grant him eternal rest and grant those he left behind the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss.”
