Laolu Akande, an assistant to former vice president Yemi Osinbajo, has expressed doubts about the need for Nigeria to create a Ministry of Livestock Development in the face of continuing efforts to stop the recurring conflicts between farmers and herders.
His comments are relevant given that Bola Tinubu just approved the ministry’s establishment, which aims to resolve the protracted dispute over pasture, land, and water resources.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Akande voiced doubts on the necessity of an additional state organisation devoted to the management of livestock.

He mentioned current initiatives like the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP), which was started under the former president Muhammadu Buhari’s government, as possible remedies if they were successfully carried out.
“I am not sure that we need a ministry of livestock,” Akande stated, emphasizing that the key hindrances lie in the lack of will and expertise to execute the NLTP comprehensively. He suggested awaiting further details before making a definitive judgment on the ministry’s necessity.
In Nigeria, the protracted war between farmers and herders has resulted in substantial property destruction and the loss of many lives. Previous governments and state authorities have implemented a number of policies, such as the NLTP and restrictions on open grazing, in an effort to lessen the situation.

Akande highlighted his conviction that the NLTP’s effective execution could both modernise Nigeria’s livestock sector and put an end to conflicts between farmers and herders. He stressed how the proposal may address the fundamental problems causing the conflict and have a transformative effect.
