Police Uncover Plots To Stage Violent Protests In Kano After Appeal Court Judgement

In light of the ruling by the Appeal Court in favour of the All Progressives Congress, or APC, the police in Kano State have issued a warning on attempts by certain party members to start violent protests within the state.

Muhammad Usaini Gumel, the State Commissioner of Police, issued a warning, stating that anyone attempting to disturb the peace in the State will be taken into custody and subject to the full force of the law.

According to him, the Command possessed reliable intelligence indicating certain factions of political party adherents were utilising non-traditional media channels to organise individuals and organise a protest in the streets against the Friday, November 17, 2023, ruling of the Kano State Governorship Appeal Court.

“The information revealed that the intention of the protesters is to shut down the State in an action which may likely result in violence.

“It’s on this note that the police command issued a warning to residents of the state to be extra-careful as whoever intends to conduct any protest or procession should do so in accordance with the provisions of the law.

“Furthermore, you will all recall that prior to the court ruling, the leaderships of both NNPP and APC had been invited by the Kano State Police Command where a peace accord was signed on Thursday, 16th November, 2023,” he noted.

He went on to say that regardless of the verdict, the goal of the peace agreement was to promote unity and guarantee that Kano State’s political climate remained calm.

“In furtherance, the leadership of the two political parties promised that no politically motivated clusters of people would be allowed at any location under whatever guise, their supporters would not engage in any mass action suggesting preparation for violent processions, protests, or celebrations that may trigger reactions, unguarded statements from their members likely to increase political tension or undermine the security arrangements and sanctity of the judiciary,” he added.

All locals were urged by the commissioner of police to remain composed and to abstain from any unlawful assembly, demonstration, or parade that would incite violence.
