President Bola Tinubu has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Onyeka Onwenu, a celebrated singer, songwriter, actor, journalist, activist, and politician. The President’s message of sympathy was delivered through a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, under the title, “President Tinubu Mourns Iconic Artiste, Onyeka Onwenu.”
Onwenu, who passed away at the age of 72, died on Tuesday night at Reddington Hospital in Lagos after collapsing at the birthday celebration of Mrs. Stella Okoli, CEO of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, where she had just performed.
In his message, President Tinubu mourned the loss of the “Queen of Songs,” recalling her uplifting and soulful performance of “One Love” in the 1990s, which inspired a spirit of unity and harmony across the nation. He also highlighted her notable collaboration with King Sunny Ade on the track “Wait for Me,” a memorable campaign promoting family planning in the 1980s.
“Ms. Onwenu lives on in her timeless masterpieces,” the President remarked, celebrating her life as a versatile and immensely talented artist who dedicated herself to various forms of creative expression, bringing joy and laughter to countless people.
President Tinubu extended his sympathies to the entertainment industry, the Government of Imo State, and the many fans of the late star, acknowledging the profound loss they all share. He prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul, expressing hope that she finds a place “yonder where the music never fades and where there is ‘Dancing in the Sun.’”
