Rotimi Akin, spokesperson for the House of Representatives, has clarified that the monthly salary for lawmakers is N600,000, contrary to earlier speculations of N900,000. Akin made this statement on Wednesday in Abuja, responding to media reports suggesting discrepancies in lawmakers’ salaries.
Akin explained that recent reports inaccurately claimed that lawmakers received N936,979 for July and that they had not adhered to a 50 percent salary cut resolution. He emphasized that the true monthly salary for members is N600,000, which is subject to deductions for housing advances and other allowances paid at the start of their tenure.
He also addressed the unique case of a member who displayed his salary on television, noting that this individual was an exception due to a court decision that delayed his assumption of office.
The spokesperson reiterated the House’s commitment to the resolution passed on July 18, 2024, which mandates a 50 percent reduction in salaries for six months. He acknowledged a delay in implementing this resolution for July due to necessary administrative procedures and coordination with financial institutions. Akin assured that instructions for adjusting salaries have now been issued and will be enforced going forward.
He urged patience from the public and reassured that the House is dedicated to upholding its pledge and working to regain and maintain the trust of Nigerians.
