In response to the economic challenges following the removal of the petrol subsidy, the Nigerian House of Representatives has accumulated ₦704.91 million by donating 50% of their salaries over the past six months.
This initiative, proposed by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu in July, aimed to alleviate the hardships faced by vulnerable Nigerians. Kalu emphasized the need for such a sacrifice, stating, “This government is doing its best, but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I want to plead with our colleagues to sacrifice 50 per cent for a period of six months.”
Speaker Tajudeen Abba announced during Thursday’s plenary that the funds would be presented to President Bola Tinubu on December 31, 2024, for the exclusive benefit of those in need. He remarked, “The contributions you made highlight the steadfastness and dedication of members to addressing the critical needs of Nigerians.”
This collective effort underscores the lawmakers’ commitment to supporting citizens during challenging economic times.
