Governor of Rivers State Siminalayi Fubara expresses concern that President Bola Tinubu mentioned him by name in his remarks regarding the dismantling of Rivers State local government secretariats.
Fubara voiced this worry on Monday’s Politics Today show on Channels Television.
Recall that on Monday, there were gunshots intermittently fired in Ahoada East in response to newly elected council officials, and that violent clashes broke out in at least four local government areas. Parts of the buildings in Eleme, Ikwerre, and Emohua council premises were set on fire by rogue political thugs.
Despite Political Distractions, I Won’t Fail Rivers People – Fubara
The police policemen guarding the 23 council secretariats withdrew shortly after the LG secretariats were set on fire.
The police, the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the police had chosen not to participate in the election that resulted in the new LG chairs.
In the oil-rich state, the Action People’s Party (APP) won 22 of the 23 chairmanships, while the Action Alliance (AA) secured one seat.
The 23 freshly elected local government chairmen were sworn in by Fubara on Sunday, but on Monday, some of the bosses faced attacks.
Political rivals also set fire to a few council secretariats.

Tinubu gave the police orders to secure the state’s local government secretariats in a statement released late on Monday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.
The President further asked Rivers State’s political elite and followers, as well as Governor Siminalayi Fubara, to use caution and respect the law.
“I do not have any issue with it (the President’s intervention), but I am a bit concerned when my name was only mentioned,” Fubara remarked in response to Tinubu’s remarks regarding the matter.
“The issue is very simple. It’s as simple as ABC, everyone in Nigeria, everyone in Rivers State knows where this issue is coming from. It’s not rocket science. We know what the issue is and the issue is not Fubara, it is not.
“I believe strongly that with the recent intervention of the Inspector General of Police, maybe we will have a breathing space.

“Maybe as a result of him pulling his men out of those secretariats might be one of the reasons they (hoodlums) took advantage of the situation but I will appeal that while the men are there, the elected officers should have the opportunity to do their work, at least, let them provide security for them, which was even what I was thinking of.
“I was never of the opinion that the police should pull out completely. No. When they said they were moving out, it was what allowed these miscreants to take advantage of the secretariats to destroy them.”
