Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, has urged the Supreme Court to rule on the issue of the federal government’s collection and distribution of value-added tax derived from the state.
He claimed that a positive decision would result in greater financial resources, which would ultimately speed up the state’s economic progress.
According to Anaedoonline.ng, the governor made the appeal on Saturday at the Sharks Football Stadium in Port Harcourt as part of Nigeria’s 62nd anniversary of its independence.

Speaking on the state of the country, he noted that the corruption and insecurity that millions of Nigerians are experiencing may not get better anytime soon.
He said, “We have also not given up in our determination to right the injustice associated with the collection and distribution of value-added taxes generated from the state by the Federal Government just as we again call on the Supreme Court to, please, treat this matter with the urgency that it requires.”

According to Wike, since the nation’s return to democracy in 1999, purposeful constitutional distortions, institutional flaws, and rampant corruption have prevented Nigerians from engaging in a healthy democratic process.

“This is not to say that Nigeria has not made any progress as a nation. Certainly, we have achieved some visible developmental strides and economic progress as Africa’s largest economy. The fact that we have remained together despite the recurrent conflicts and crisis of confidence is also worth celebrating as an achievement.
“But, after 62 years, Nigeria deserves more than what it has achieved and Nigerians likewise deserve much more than what their leaders have delivered to them with the country’s enormous natural and human resources,” he added.
The governor believed that the current federal government had failed to guarantee the safety of lives and property, which is the most fundamental function.
The leader of the Peoples Democratic Party bemoaned the breakdown of the healthcare and education systems and added that the federal government still plays games with young people’s futures.

“And with compulsive corruption, insecurity, low export earnings, protracted forex crisis and an economy so close to bankruptcy the untold suffering and hopeless future among Nigerians will continue if something is not done to improve the quality of political leadership in our country,” he added.
