Significant public outrage has been directed at Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu for renaming a major state roadway in honour of Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu.
Governor of Katsina State Umaru Dikko Radda was supposed to open the road, formerly known as “Pepsi Road,” on June 3, but the ceremony was rescheduled.
On Saturday, a picture of the recently dubbed “Seyi Ahmed Bola Tinubu Road” went popular on social media, drawing condemnation from locals and users of X. There is currently no word on the new commissioning date.

Many in the area are upset with the choice, arguing that Seyi Tinubu hasn’t contributed much to Sokoto or Nigeria and that it is pointless to name the road after him.
“The governor left many illustrious Sokoto indigenes and instead named a road after the president’s son who is not even from Sokoto or anywhere in the northern region,” a citizen called Salisu Ahmadu told Peoples Gazette.
Reactions on social media were mostly negative. One X user said, “Some leaders are seriously need medical attention,” citing Engineer Awonbiowo Luqman.
Another, Henry TP, articulated, “This country this very country sycophant everywhere.” While another X user, Nze Ndi Anambra, stated, “Since wole Soyinka accepted road in Abuja, why can’t first son accept his own in sokoto ?
Another x user, @UncleAnass said, “This is how @Ahmedaliyuskt is denigrating the name of Sokoto with his lack of capacity and sheepishness. Imagine naming a road after Seyi Tinubu. Not even the Tinubu self. Mtschew. This is so denigrating. This is really pathetic. Allah ya isa.”

Another X user, Heinz_Gunner, stated, “Road to North Korea. This is how it begins!!,” while @jnraib2 said “Even Lagos didn’t name a road after Seyi Tinubu, but Sokoto governor must impress Tinubu.”
@AsIngawa001 said “Seyi Tinubu road in Sokoto State stands as a testament to Nigeria’s practice of celebrating individuals with little or no contribution to the country’s progress.”
Despite not having a formal role in the government, Seyi Tinubu has been a visible member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and has travelled abroad with his father on multiple occasions.
To underscore his informal role, he had previously been denied entry to a Federal Executive Council meeting.
Requests for responses from Sokoto governor’s spokesperson Abubakar Bawa were not successful.
