The Nigerian Super Eagles have been praised by the Minister for Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, for their maturity amidst challenging circumstances in Libya. Upon their return to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, the minister acknowledged the team’s composure during their ordeal, which saw them held for over 16 hours at an abandoned airport in Al Abraq. Their flight, originally scheduled to land in Benghazi for the second leg of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match, was diverted, resulting in the players being stranded.
After eventually departing Libya, the Super Eagles made a stop at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano State before proceeding to Abuja. Senator Enoh reassured the team that their safe return was the nation’s primary concern, highlighting how their calmness in the face of adversity embodied the “Nigerian spirit.”
“We were all awake and praying for your safe return. What mattered most was your safety,” Enoh told the players. He also revealed that the Ministry was in touch with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding the situation. CAF has since launched an investigation into the disturbing incident.
