The ruling on local government autonomy by the Supreme Court has been characterised by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as a diversion from the nation’s most urgent problems.
Makinde underlined the necessity of addressing Nigeria’s fundamental issues with productivity, hunger, and rage in a video posted on X Space.
He said in part, “So the judgment of the Supreme Court, there is local government autonomy, financial autonomy, and all of that, and I will still say it, I think it’s just a distraction. We must face the real issues that we have.

“The issue that we have is that we are not producing enough and we are not productive”, He added.
According to Anaedoonline.ng, a seven-member bench of the Supreme Court decided that Nigeria’s 774 local government councils had a constitutional right to independently handle their budgets free from state government intervention. Justice Emmanuel Agim gave the ruling.
