On Monday, members of the ruling All Progressives Congress’s National Working Committee rejected Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the party’s consensus candidate, deepening the party’s turmoil.
The retort comes only hours after the party’s consensus candidate, Lawan, was declared by Abdullahi Adamu, the party’s National Chairman.
On Monday, at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, Adamu delivered the bombshell during a meeting of the NWC.

According to him, Lawan was chosen after extensive deliberation with President Muhammadu Buhari, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
His announcement, however, did not go down well with NWC members, who protested the decision, insisting that the party provide an equal playing field for all candidates.
Addressing newsmen in front of the party secretariat in Abuja, the National Organising Secretary of the APC, Suleman Argungu, disclosed that the choice of Lawan was not the decision taken by the party as alleged.
“We want to state that the pronouncement of Lawan as the consensus candidate was the chairman’s opinion and he is entitled to his opinion.
“It is not the position of the party,” he said.
Other members of the All Progressives Congress’s National Working Committee were also present at the press conference.

Mallam Salihu Lukman, National Vice Chairman (North-West), Isaac Kekemeke, National Vice Chairman (South-West), and five other NWC members are among them.
The claim and counter-claim were made on the opening day of the APC conference, which began today in Abuja’s Eagle Square.
