In advance of the state election slated for July 16th, Rauf Aregbesola, the interior minister, avoided the All Progressives Congress (APC) Mega Rally on Tuesday in his native state of Osun.
APC leaders, including the party’s presidential hopeful Bola Tinubu, were in Osun State to support Aregbesola’s replacement, Governor Gboyega Oyetola, who is running for re-election.
Aregbesola’s media adviser, Sola Fasure, explained in a statement that the minister visited the Kirikiri Maximum and Minimum Security Custodial Centers in Lagos State as a reason for his absence.

During the visit, the minister stated that the correctional services currently house around 61,000 suspected terrorists.
He assured Nigerians that the current administration would rise above the challenges of insecurity and emerge stronger and more resilient.
He said: “Today, a core of the criminal elements and insurgents across the country are on a path to defeat, they have been heavily degraded. Over 61,000 of them are in our custody in the North-East.
“Our assurance to Nigerians is that we shall rise above these challenges and emerge stronger and more resilient.”
