The region was on edge due to the possibility of open combat breaking out between the long-standing enemies of the Middle East and engulfing the United States. This led to pleas for moderation from both Arab and international powers in order to prevent further escalation.
US President Biden Vows ‘Iran Will Never Get Nuclear Weapon On My Watch’
The Middle East is “on the brink,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres declared during a Security Council meeting on Sunday in reaction to the strike. The residents of the area are indeed facing the threat of a catastrophic, all-out war. This is the ideal moment to defuse and de-escalate”.
Robert Wood, the deputy US ambassador to the UN, urged the council to vehemently denounce Iran’s attack while announcing that Washington would look into taking further, undefined steps at the UN to hold Iran responsible and issuing a warning against more aggression.
In his words, “Let me be clear: if Iran or its proxies take actions against the United States or further action against Israel, Iran will be held responsible”
Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin, in the meantime, spoke with counterparts in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, and Jordan, reiterating Washington’s desire to prevent escalation, the significance of a coordinated diplomatic response, and the fact that the United States will continue to support Israel’s defence.
