Seven Coronavirus patients have been discharged from the Isolation Centre in Lagos state.

The state Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the announcement on his Twitter handle on Thursday.

He said “Good people of Lagos,

“I bring you awesome news from IDH, Yaba, which is a testament to our resolve to overcome the lethal #COVID19 pandemic ravaging the world.

The Federal Government has said Nigerians abroad, who wish to be evacuated, must test negative for coronavirus.

This was contained in a form entitled: “COVID-19 Application Form for Nigerians who want to return home” on the website of the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM.

The form states that anyone who intends to return “must get tested for the virus in your country of residence and be issued an authorised health clearance certificate attesting that you are COVID-19 free”.

“This certificate must be presented and authenticated by officials at the airport in your country of departure before you are allowed to board the aircraft,” it said.

“On landing, you will also be on compulsory quarantine for 14 days on arrival in Nigeria, at an NCDC approved location.”

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, NIDCOM chairman, had announced that the financial implications of the evacuation will be borne by the evacuees.

On Monday, Geoffrey Onyeama, minister of foreign affairs, said only a few Nigerians abroad had so far indicated interest to be evacuated.

“We sent the letters (to the embassies) last week but we have not gotten many persons that want to return now,” he said.

“They are just a few, not many; but we are still waiting to confirm their actual number.”

But as of today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffery Onyeama, says 200 Nigerians residing in the United States of America have signified interest to be evacuated to Nigeria following the global Coronavirus pandemic.

During the daily Presidential Taskforce against COVID-19 press briefing on Wednesday April 8, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffery Onyeama revealed that the government made the announcement for willing Nigerians to register for evacuation after it had ensured there are isolation centres and other logistical arrangements to attend to any emergency when they arrive.

200 US-Based Nigerians Are Willing To Be Evacuated – Minister

Nigeria Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffery Onyeama, says 200 Nigerians residing in the United States of America have signified interest to be evacuated to Nigeria following the global Coronavirus pandemic.

“The presidential task force under the chairmanship of the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF) has actually been engaging with this when there was a closure of the airport. So, the response was not as a result of letters coming in from Nigerians in the diaspora as has been mentioned in some media houses.

“At that time, we did not have all our isolation centres in place and all the other logistical arrangements in place. So for that reason, we’ve kept it in abeyance while we were putting all those things in place and hence now, we have sufficient beds and so forth and protocol is no well established, and we now feel much stronger and in a better position to undertake this herculean task of trying to see how we can bring Nigerians outside the country back into the country.

“In that context, we’ve now started to get great numbers of Nigerians especially in the United States where almost 200 have now indicated and are willing to return. We are engaging with our embassies in China and the high commission in London and also in France to work out all the logistics. Things are now falling in place, and we are getting a sense of what needs to be done.” the minister said

Onyeama, however, said 67 Nigerians, traveling through land from neighbouring countries were on their way to the Nigeria but the travellers would be isolated before allowing them freedom.

“We have 67 Nigerians including children and women. They were in Cote D’ivoire and we needed to engage with the government of Togo, the government of Benin for them to be able to go through. And they are now at the Nigerian border and we got the authorisation for them to come into the country and they would be in isolation for the mandatory 14 days,” he said.

Coronavirus: Man Busted For Stealing, Selling Over 2 Million Face Masks

A Businessman has been arrested by the police after he stole up to 2 million face masks from a medical supplies company that had gone into liquidation, according to New York Post.

The businessman sold the masks to his contacts in Portugal after keeping stock at a locked warehouse on an industrial estate in the Galician cathedral city of Santiago de Compostela., Spain according to reports emanating from Spain.

Police investigators say the man didn’t only steal masks but also stole other protective equipment, including surgical gloves.

The Spanish government had to buy face masks from China in an emergency purchase, as it was left without enough masks when people became infected with coronavirus and hundreds of people began to die every day in Spain.

According to investigators, the theft is said to have occurred at the end of February.

Alfonso Rueda, vice-president of the regional Xunta de Galicia regional government, visited the theft site on Monday and said only around 100 out of the two million face masks stored there had been left untouched.

He said: “The police received a tip-off that there could have been valuable health equipment here which would have been so necessary in the fight against COVID-19. ‘It had been cleaned out by the time they arrived. We calculate two million face masks that have been stolen. Only the boxes are left.

“There are also empty boxes which contained surgical gloves but we don’t know at this stage exactly how many are missing.’

“The police investigation has led to the identification and arrest of the main suspect, a person from Santiago who has already appeared in court.”

COVID-19: FG Gives Reasons For Not conducting Mass Test On Nigerians

The Federal Government has said that conducting mass testing for Coronavirus in Nigeria would not be possible for now given that the nation has over 200 million population.

This was made known by the Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, during a news briefing after the arrival of the Chinese experts in Abuja, on Wednesday.

Ehanire said that the government was more focused on conducting tests for those who had been abroad or those who may have come in contact with any positive case.

He said, “We have 200 million citizens and mass testing is not something that I think is very feasible now, we are doing targeted testing.

“We are targeting those who are likely to have been affected, so we are looking at areas and persons who meet certain criteria that we set.

“Criteria of having been abroad, having been in contact with persons who have been abroad or having been in a cluster of places where we have a lot of positives.

“Even though it is going into secondary we are doing what is called smart testing in order to identify the cases that are giving us concern.”

According to him, researches were ongoing in many countries and the government was relying on science and advice from WHO to overcome the pandemic, NAN reports.

A 15-man COVID-19 medical team from China has landed in Nigeria.

They arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, Wednesday afternoon, aboard a chartered Air Peace aircraft.

The Lagos State government on Wednesday confirmed the death of a COVID-19 patient in the state.

Prof. Akin Abayomi, Commissioner of Health in the state disclosed that the deceased was a 66-year-old who recently returned from India.

The Rivers State Government has declared Carveton Helicopters, Persona Non Grata in the state for endangering the lives of Rivers people by what it said is a suspicious operation of the company in the state.

Governor Nyesom Wike in a media address directed Local Government Council Chairmen to close the Offices of Carveton Helicopters across the state.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed twenty two new cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria.

NCDC, which made the announcement Wednesday night via its Twitter handle, noted that at the moment, Nigeria has 276 confirmed cases of the virus and 44 cases have been discharged.

Some rooms at the office of the Accountant-General of the Federation in Abuja were destroyed on Wednesday by fire.

The fire started at the Treasure House, which was recently renovated, but was put out by men of the fire service.

At least 78 Lagos State residents have been arrested and convicted for violating “the principles of social distancing”.

The Lagos Police Command’s spokesman, Bala Elkana, in a statement on Wednesday, said the convicted persons were arrested playing football on major streets and having group exercise in large number.

The Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kola Ologbondiyan, has alleged foul play by the Buhari administration after fire gutted some rooms at the office of the Accountant-General of the Federation in Abuja on Wednesday.

Ologbondiyan claimed that the fire is not unconnected with the call for a probe into subsidy payments made by the government since 2015 when Buhari became president.

A total of 91 people will be put under quarantine, after returning to Nigeria through land borders, as the COVID-19 continues to spread.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, speaking at a press conference organised by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja on Wednesday, said 67 persons had already arrived at the country’s land border.

The Katsina State Government has lifted suspension on Friday congregational prayers earlier stopped due to COVID-19.

Secretary to the State Government, Mustapha Inuwa, said the decision was an outcome of a meeting between the government, religious leaders, traditional rulers and security agents.

The Lagos State Government has withdrawn charges against Azeez Fashola aka Naira Marley and a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Babatunde Gbadamosi. Naira Marley and Gbadamosi were scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday at the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Ogba for violation of social gathering order.

But a Defence Counsel, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, (SAN) disclosed that the government withdrew the four counts filed against the three defendants.

Coronavirus: Chinese Doctors Sent On Cumpulsory 14 Days Isolation

Amid a wave of opposition, 15 Chinese medical experts arrived in Nigeria on Wednesday, to join the battle against Coronavirus.

The Federal Government received some medical equipment and supplies brought by medical team which arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja in a chartered Air Peace flight.

China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the sponsor of the trip, said they brought about 16-tons of test kits, ventilators, disinfection machine, disposable medical masks, N95 masks, medications, rubber gloves, protective gowns, goggles, face shields, infra-red thermometers and others.

Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, who was at the airport to receive the Chinese and their supplies, said the team will be quarantined for two weeks.

“They knew that before they came and have undergone tests before they left their country.

“Nevertheless, they will be in quarantine for 14 days. The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has gone to see where they will be quarantined.”

Ehanire added: “The equipment (they brought) will assist a lot to fill some existing gaps. We now have 50 more ventilators.”

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Zhou Pingjian, said the equipment and medical supplies are valued at about $1.5million. Added to the cost of the flight, everything is worth about $2million.

Our reporter learnt that 12 of the 15-man team are doctors. The rest are specialists in infectious diseases, respiratory illnesses, intensive care, cardiology, neurology, general surgery and anesthesiology.

CCECC Nigeria Managing Director, Michael Jiang, said in a statement: “The primary purpose of the working team is to escort the medical supply and provide guidance for their usage and distribution.

“They will also provide CCECC employees with critical and necessary healthcare assistance where necessary. They are also coming with adequate Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and medical items for the employees.

“In addition, under the directive of the Chinese Embassy and in response to the Nigeria Government’s request, the working team may also share with Nigerian medical teams effective methods on how to contain the COVID-19 and provide advice on the use of relevant medical equipment.

“The team is not coming to treat COVID-19 patients in Nigeria. In keeping with its corporate value, ‘Stride with Nigeria’, CCECC is participating in the construction of two COVID-19 response facilities in the FCT for free as part of its Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR).

“The facilities are a 196-bed at ‘ThisDay Dome Treatment Centre,’ in collaboration with Sahara Group and Arise News; and the 150-bed ‘Idu Depot Treatment Centre’.”

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria (NARD) re-iterated that the Chinese experts must not directly treat any Nigerian patient.

They described any attempt by the Chinese medical team to manage any Nigerian patient as unethical and illegal.

NMA President Dr Francis Faduyile told our reporter: “Our stand has not changed and we still insist that there is nothing that they (Chinese) want to offer that can improve what we have on the ground.

“There are so many things that we need to put into consideration because it is a war affecting ordinary Nigerians, and sometimes, you look at the risk and benefits.

“Our members will look at what is on the ground; if we are doing what we are doing and they (Chinese) do not interfere with us, we will continue doing what we are doing for Nigerians.

“We cannot now precipitously make a decision. We are an association that is bounded by ethics, and rules. In a very short while, you will hear our decision”

NARD President, Dr Sokomba Aliyu, said while the association was not against donations, the experts cannot attend to any Nigerian patient because they do not have the license to practice in Nigeria.

“We do not need their hands as we are not overwhelmed and can take care of our patients. So far, they have also stated that they are not coming to attend to patients, so we cannot say categorically if their words are anything to go by.

“While they (officials) have gone ahead to welcome the Chinese, we are hopeful that the Chinese will have nothing to do with our patients because if they proceed to involve the Chinese in the management of our patients, we will just leave the patients for the Chinese to continue.

“As it is now, we are going to be watchful and wait for them to see how far they are engaging the Chinese, and to what extent they are going to be managing our patients,” Aliyu said.

Also yesterday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) asked Nigerians to hold President Muhammadu Buhari responsible should there be an upsurge in the rate of COVID-19 infection and death following the arrival of the Chinese.

The party said it was alarmed that the President ignored the protests by Nigerians and professional bodies, including the NMA and allowed the Chinese doctors to be brought in “from the hotbed of the plague”.

PDP, through its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, questioned the safety of kits and equipment from China, adding that it was concerned about “scary reports of escalation of the scourge in certain countries reportedly after the arrival of Chinese medical personnel”.

“Our doctors and nurses have been on top of the situation with records of recoveries and fewer casualties, thus raising questions about the real intentions of bringing in doctors from China.

”Nigerians are aware that since the index case was reported till date, our nation’s COVID-19 data stands at 254 confirmed cases, out of which 44 have been successfully treated by our doctors with six deaths, which reportedly had other underlining ailments”, the party noted.

The figure rose to 276 last night.

The party charged Nigerians to be extra vigilant and asked the Presidential Task Force to outline the states and local government areas the Chinese doctors are expected to operate in for monitoring .

Also, the United Labour Congress (ULC) said while there is nothing wrong with seeking help, stakeholders should have been carried along.

Its President Comrade Joe Ajaero said in a statement: “We are surprised that the decision to bring in the Chinese medical experts was not fully discussed and agreed among the top medical practitioners and stakeholders in the nation… This is worrying.

“Why would such a crucial decision be taken in secret without coordinate input from the critical stakeholders in the nation?

“This sector is a highly specialised area which requires that at all times the input of the professionals in this sector to process the offer and agree on its mechanics and modalities.

“As we battle against COVID-19, we strongly believe that the nation’s medical experts must be involved if not allowed to be at the forefront of taking such crucial decisions.”

ULC urged the Federal Government to address Nigerians’ fears, especially as it relates coronavirus.

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) said it would resist any move to deploy Chinese medical team in Southeast and Southsouth.

Its leader Uchenna Madu said in a statement: “We shall resist any medical assistance from China…Medical doctors and other health workers in Southeast and Southsouth are capable and trained to handle every medical challenge professionally in those areas.”

As the Nigerian government keeps recording new cases of the coronavirus, security operatives do their best to make sure that citizens comply with the lockdown and social distancing directive.

To the amazement of many, utmost compliance has been recorded on the lockdown in major parts of the nation with the World Health Organisation, praising the Nigerian government on measures it took to control the spread of the Coronavirus in its country.

However, a military personnel whose name as of the time of filing this report is unknown met his Waterloo in the hands of security operatives who apprehended him while he was driving during the lockdown.

The culprit is said to have been plying one way during the lockdown on kubuwa expressway was also seen without a face mask and also had passengers whom he was conveying to an undisclosed destination.

He was arrested and even though he kept pleading for mercy and forgiveness, the security personnel would have none of it as they placed more value on safety and life of Nigerians at large.

Chinese Doctors: Hold Buhari, APC Responsible For Any COVID-19 Upsurge – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has charged Nigerians to hold President Muhammadu Buhari responsible should there be any upsurge in the rate of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) infection and death in the country.

This, according to the party followed the importation of doctors from China, the epicenter of the scourge, by the Buhari-led federal government.

A statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of party, Kola Ologbondiyan on Wednesday night said, the PDP was alarmed that President Buhari ignored the protests by Nigerians and professional bodies including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and allowed the importation of the Chinese doctors despite warnings that bringing in doctors from the hotbed of the plague could expose the country’s citizens to further risks.

The statement read in part: “This is even as Nigerians across board have continued to question the status, identity and interest of the Chinese doctors as well as the safety of kits and equipment from China, particularly following scary reports of escalation of the scourge in certain countries reportedly after the arrival of Chinese medical personnel in those countries.

“Moreover, our doctors and nurses have been on top of the situation with records of recoveries and less casualties, thus raising questions about the real intentions of bringing in doctors from China.

“The situation is even more distressing as the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 had been making frantic effort to exonerate itself from the decision to bring in the Chinese doctors into our country.

“The PDP wants President Buhari to note that Nigerians already know the pace, intensity and trajectory of COVID-19 statistics at the time the Federal Government, which he leads, gave passage to these Chinese doctors.

“Nigerians are aware that since the index case was reported till date, our nation’s COVID-19 data stands at 276 confirmed cases, out of which 44 have been successfully treated by our doctors with 6 deaths, which reportedly had other underlining ailments.

“Our party therefore, calls on the entire world to hold President Buhari responsible should there be any sudden upsurge in COVID-19 infection and deaths in our country, now that the Chinese doctors have been brought in despite protests by Nigerians.

“The PDP however, charges Nigerians to be extra vigilant at this time as our party also demands that the Presidential Task Force outlines the states and local governments where the Chinese doctors are expected to operate, to enable Nigerians monitor their activities as well as the aftermath of such activities,” the statement concluded.
