Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is about to be released from the Department of State Services’ (DSS) detention.
Emefiele may be released shortly after President Bola Tinubu gave the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) authority to resolve his case, according to information obtained by Anaedoonline.ng.
The cable cited Ministry of Justice officials as saying that the president ordered the EFCC to take up Emefiele’s case from the DSS and manage the prosecution.
JUST IN: Suspended CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele Arrested By DSS
Remember that on June 9, President Bola Tinubu instructed Emefiele to hand over his responsibilities to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, the Deputy Governor of Operations Directorate at the time, and suspended Emefiele.
The DSS declared that Emefiele was under its arrest for “some investigative reasons” the next day.
He was given N20 million in bail after being charged with two counts of “illegal possession” of firearms at a federal high court in Lagos on July 25.
Afterwards, on August 17, the federal government retracted the two-count charge.
But a new 20-count indictment was filed against him, alleging, among other things, that he conspired to commit procurement fraud.

Twice the arraignment has been postponed, and according to TheCable, Emefiele is pushing for a plea deal.
Emefiele was obliged under the arrangement to “disgorge” certain assets and step down as governor of the CBN.
On September 22, the CBN officially confirmed Emefiele’s resignation, after Olayemi Cardoso was appointed as substantive governor of the apex bank.
