Canadian hip-hop star Drake has placed a daring $300,000 (N465 million) bet on Canada’s soccer team to defeat Argentina in the 2024 Copa América semifinal. If Canada manages to upset Lionel Messi and the favored Argentine squad, Drake stands to win a substantial $2.88 million.

Drake announced his bet on social media on Tuesday, playfully captioning it, “This could get Messi,” along with a Canadian flag emoji. Canada’s journey to the semifinal has been a surprising and inspiring story in this year’s tournament. Under head coach Jesse Marsch, the team entered the Copa América ranked 11th out of 16 teams based on FIFA rankings. This marks Canada’s debut in the prestigious South American tournament, as they aim for their first major title since the 1990 North American Nations Cup.

The upcoming match will be only the second time Canada and Argentina have faced each other in Copa América play, with Argentina winning their group stage encounter 2-0 on June 20. Historically, the two nations have met just once before, in a 2010 friendly where Argentina triumphed 5-0.

Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni, has confirmed that Messi, who recently recovered from a thigh injury, will be playing in the semifinal. The 37-year-old superstar sat out Argentina’s final group game against Peru but returned to play the full 90 minutes in their quarterfinal victory over Ecuador.

Amid Coronavirus outbreak, Ecuador has filled a major runway with several vehicles to stop international flights from landing.

The move was taken to stop planes from Europe amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In a move to curtail the spread of coronavirus in Ecuador, police have blockaded a major runway with vehicles to stop foreign planes from landing after international flights were banned.

Footage shows dozens of security vehicles on the runway at Jose Joaquin de Olmedo International airport, making it impossible for aircrafts to land.

The blockade affected an Iberia Airbus A340 travelling from Madrid and a KLM Boeing 777 from Amsterdam

The aircrafts were sent to Ecuador to pick up their citizens in the country to take them home. It’s unclear if the two flights have returned to Europe. Some International flights had to be diverted to nearby Quito.

Guayaquil city mayor, Cynthia Viteri, who is part of the conservative Social Christian Party, claimed responsibility for the incident.

Viteri said she would do it again to protect Guyauquil from the arrival of people who may have caught coronavirus.

She said Guyauquil is bringing in strict restrictions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in the city.

The city, Guyauquil, is one of the worst-affected in Ecuador. Ecuador has suffered 168 confirmed cases of the deadly virus and three deaths.
