Imam, a 24-year-old first-class graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Brighton University in the UK, has no prior work experience, raising concerns about his suitability for the role.

Critics argue that Imam’s youth and inexperience make him ill-suited to lead an important government agency like FERMA. They expressed worries that the appointment might set a dangerous precedent, where politicians could appoint their children to high-profile positions without considering their qualifications.

The Federal route Maintenance Agency (FERMA) and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing have been requested by the House of Representatives to begin quick rehabilitation of the Oba-Nnewi-Uga-Akokwa-Arondizuogu-Okigwe route.

The resolution followed the unanimous approval of a motion proposed by Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere (PDP-Imo) at plenary on Thursday.

Mr. Ugochinyere, who introduced the motion, stated that the road runs through the Anambra and Imo federal constituencies of Idemili North-South, Nnewi North-South-Ekwusigo, Aguata, and Ideato North-South.

The lawmaker, who represents Ideato North and South in Imo, said the route had recently become a death trap. According to him, it has become a hotspot for robbery, kidnapping, and the murder of innocent bystanders.

According to Mr. Ugochinyere, the failed sections of the road compelled residents of the impacted areas to evacuate their homes in search of safety and shelter elsewhere.

“Now that the rain is here, the already deplorable state of the road has been worsened and inhabitants of the communities are no longer able to go about their daily activities freely, as their lives and property are under threat due to the torrential erosions that ensue from the rains,” he explained. “Worried that if no serious remedial or reconstruction work is carried out on theroad, the lives, businesses and economy of inhabitants of the affected communities.will be completely crumbled.”

A Federal Road Bill aimed at scraping the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency Act, Federal Highways Act and the Control of Advertisement on Federal Highways Act has been passed into law.

Anaedoonline.ng reports that the bill was passed into law by the Senate on Wednesday, September 29.

The passed bill if implemented would facilitate the establishment of an agency to govern and manage the nation’s federal roads network.

The bill is also expected to regulate contracts for road concession and other forms of public-private partnership as well as set guidelines for the working of PPP contracts.

Anaedoonline.ng understands that bill was looked into following a motion raised by the Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Toby Okechukwu (PDP, Enugu) and Ossai Nicholas (PDP, Delta).

The bill was promoted in the upper chamber by the Senate Leader, Yahaya Abubakar (APC, Kebbi) for concurrence and passage in line with legislative traditions.

There are also expectations that the bill would facilitate private sector participation in the development, financing, maintenance, management, and improvement of roads in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari-led government has set out plans to fix dilapidated roads across five states.

The development was made public in a statement released a few days ago by the Works and Housing Minister, Babatunde Fashola, Naija News reports.
