Air Peace, Nigeria’s leading airline, has seen a rise in demand for its Lagos to London route, with economy class seats sold out for the next 60 days. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the airline, which commenced its European flight services just three months ago.
Chief Operating Officer, Toyin Olajide, expressed gratitude to Nigerian travelers and identified the challenges faced since launching the route. Despite these hurdles, the airline has successfully provided a new alternative for Nigerians traveling to Europe. On Sunday, June 30, 2024, Air Peace’s flight saw all economy class seats filled, along with full occupancy of the 41 business class seats. An advertising oversight for first-class seats, now resolved, had left 12 first-class and one business class seat unoccupied on the 274-seat aircraft.
Olajide noted that many Nigerians traveling from the United States to the United Kingdom are opting to book Air Peace flights to Lagos, capitalizing on the affordability of US-Europe flights. This route offers significant savings compared to direct US-Nigeria flights. Additionally, Chinese residents in Nigeria frequently use Air Peace to fly to London, connecting with China Southern Airlines to reduce travel expenses.
Air Peace’s commitment to customer satisfaction was demonstrated by the recent upgrade of two passengers from economy to business class on the Lagos route, recognizing their loyalty. The airline’s entrance into the market has also diversified its passenger base, attracting elderly travelers, students, and others previously deterred by high ticket prices. This has resulted in a 5% to 15% increase in passenger numbers.
The airline’s operations have positively impacted Nigerian brands, providing exposure for local products like farm-fresh yogurt, Gratia chin chin flakes, Olu Olu chips, and long-grain Nigerian rice. This exposure has benefited small businesses and local farmers, contributing to an economic expansion of over N2 billion.
Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, announced that the Federal Government is facilitating Nigerian airlines’ access to international routes, including the United States and South American countries. This move aligns with Air Peace’s ongoing efforts to expand its international reach since launching the Lagos-London flights on March 20.
