Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) nominee for president, claimed that the late Gani Fawehinmi, a human rights activist, gave him the idea to look into President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s certificate.
Atiku praised Fawehinmi for filing a case against Tinubu and requesting his certificate 23 years ago during a news conference on Thursday in Abuja.
The former vice president also praised renowned Nigerian investigative journalist David Hundeyin for making public Tinubu’s diplomas from Chicago State University (CSU) and South West College.
According to Atiku, it shouldn’t have taken security agencies weeks or months to check the credentials of applicants for higher office.
He said: “The reputation of Nigeria is at stake. I am a democrat by conviction and citizen of a country that I love.
“I must thank our lawyers, bother here and abroad, for help us bring clarity to this issue that has dragged for about half of a century
“The late Human right Gani Fawehinmi, has vindicated us. Now he can truly rest in peace knowing that the journey he started 23 years ago is on course.”
Remember how Atiku sued President Tinubu over his academic standing at Chicago State University?
Atiku Holds World Press Conference Over Tinubu’s Certificate Controversy
He asked for the supporting documentation for his claim that Tinubu’s CSU certificate was forged.
In the lawsuit Atiku filed to contest Tinubu’s election, the presidential election court dismissed several claims, including the one of forgery.
Atiku persisted with his petition in the US court notwithstanding the court’s decision in an effort to obtain official papers to support his claim and maybe use them in his appeal at the Supreme Court.
He had contended that Tinubu should not have been allowed to run for office because of errors in the certificate he had provided to the INEC.
