An explosion at a mosque in Gadan Village, Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State, critically injured 24 people during early morning prayers on Wednesday. The incident occurred around 5:20 AM during the “Subhi Prayer,” according to the Kano Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna.
Upon receiving reports of the explosion, Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, dispatched a specialized team to the scene. The team included experts in Explosive Ordnance Disposal Chemical Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) led by CSP Haruna Isma’il, along with crime-scene officers headed by Divisional Police Officer CSP Haruna Iliya.

The affected area was secured, and 24 victims, comprising 20 adult males and 4 male children, were swiftly transported to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital in Kano for treatment.
Preliminary forensic analysis suggests the explosion was caused by petrol, with a full investigation currently underway. The police have arrested Shafi’u Abubakar, 38, identified as the principal suspect. Abubakar reportedly admitted that his actions stemmed from a prolonged family dispute over inheritance. He targeted the mosque to draw attention to his grievances against relatives he felt had wronged him.
Abubakar is in police custody as the investigation continues, with more details expected to be released in the near future.
