Gospel minister Nathaniel Bassey has taken legal action against individuals he accuses of engaging in criminal defamation and cyberstalking. Bassey’s legal team, comprising Peter Abraham, Uche Matthew, Gbenga Agunloye, and Anthony Abia, formally lodged a petition with the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on April 1, 2024, urging an investigation and prosecution of four suspects.
The petition follows allegations made by four social media users last week, claiming that Bassey fathered the child of another well-known gospel singer, Mercy Chinwo Blessed. These accusations quickly circulated across various social media platforms, prompting Bassey to take legal action.

The petition emphasizes Bassey’s status as a respected gospel music minister, highlighting the impact of his songs and ministrations on people worldwide. It outlines the defamatory posts made by Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and DJ Spoiltkid, which allegedly aimed to tarnish Bassey’s image and character.
The legal representatives assert that the social media posts by the four individuals amount to character assassination and violate criminal and cybercrime laws. They stress the damaging consequences of such allegations on individuals’ reputations and marriages, urging law enforcement authorities to take swift action to address the matter.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Police Spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, and Mercy Chinwo’s lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
