The House of Representatives has pledged to work with real estate market players to make sure that rent payments are enforced on a regular basis.
The purpose of the motion was to address the issue of arbitrary rent increases in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and to suggest practical rules that would control the behaviour of landlords.
Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo’s motion of urgent public concern on Wednesday served as the impetus for this.

He bemoaned the high cost of rent in the Federal city Territory (FCT) during the motion, highlighting the burden it creates on numerous federal personnel who find it difficult to find housing in the city.
“Monthly rent provides tenants with flexibility, better cash flow management, reasonable move-out options, and ensures a stable income stream,” the lawmaker said.
He argued that there is a “need for government to come to the rescue of the resident and formulate policies that will regulate house rents and the activities of landlords in Abuja.”
In addition, the House approved a resolution mandating that the Federal Ministries of Works, Housing, and Habitat build reasonably priced homes and estates for the housing of federal servants.
