The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set a new deadline for ongoing voter registration of July 31, 2022.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the electoral authority announced this in a statement posted on their official social media website on Friday.

The statement reads partly; “In compliance with the interim injunction of the court pending the determination of the substantive suit, and in order to enable more Nigerians to register, the commission continued with the CVR beyond 30th June 2022.

“For this reason, the CVR has already been extended beyond 30th June 2022 for a period of 15days.

“With the Judgement of the Federal High Court, all legal encumbrances have now been removed.. Accordingly, the commission has taken the following decisions.

“1, The CVR is here by extended for another two weeks until Sunday 31st 2022 there bring the total duration of the extension to 31st July 2022.”

In order to accommodate the recent rise in registrants, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) claims it has opened an extra 25 voter registration centers in Anambra State.

The commission stated that the additional centers raise the total number of centers in the state to 87, adding that employees of the commission who were accused of bribery were being probed, while others were fired.

Dr Nkwachukwu Orji, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), announced this in a news conference held at the commission’s offices in Awka yesterday.

He said: “I am pleased to announce that the commission has created additional 25 registration centres in Anambra State, and that they commenced operation by 9.00 am today (Tuesday).

“The additional centres bring the total number of centres in Anambra State to 87.

“We have reopened some LGA offices that were shut down as a result of insecurity. Specifically, on Tuesday, 7 June 2022, the Idemili North LGA Office was reopened. Today, 14 June 2022, we have resumed registration exercise in Ogbaru and Ayamelum LGAs.”

He further stated that the commission has reorganized its operational procedure by separating people seeking biometric services from those that require non-biometric services.

Orji said biometric services involve fresh registration while non-biometric services include requests for PVC replacement, voter transfer, and updates.

“Let me restate that those requesting non-biometric services need not come to the registration centres. These services can be obtained through the commission’s CVR portal. However, we have deployed personnel to assist those who cannot access the online portal at the various registration centres.

“The state office is addressing reports of misconduct by staff of the Commission. To bolster public confidence in the commission, the two registration officers accused of misconduct in Nnewi North LGA have been replaced, while investigation of the matter continues,” Orji said.
