Nigeria is not taken seriously by the United Kingdom government, according to international relations specialist Ikiri Joe.
Joe made this statement in response to the UK’s rejection to pardon Senator Ike Ekweremadu despite mercy requests from former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Economic Community of West African States, and the National Assembly leadership.
He claimed that if the UK government’s citizens had been detained in Nigeria, Nigeria would have bowed to their demands.
In an interview with Newsmen, Joe added that Nigeria would take the latest incident as a lesson.
He said, “That decision shows the way Britain as a country and its institutions regard Nigeria.
“They do not regard Nigeria in any way and I’m sure from this event Nigeria as a country will learn a lesson.
“If it were British citizens that were arrested in Nigeria, and Britain pleaded for clemency, I’m sure Nigeria would have yielded. But for the case of Nigeria, they did not”, he said.
