Downpour Disrupts Opening Of A Law School In Rivers

Following a downpour on Friday, the ongoing inauguration of the Nigerian Law School, Port Harcourt campus, has been temporarily halted.

The state-of-the-art facility, located on a large plot of land at the Rumueme axis of Mile 4 in Obio/Akpor local government area, was completed in ten months by the Governor Nyesom Wike-led administration.

The weather changed as the program, which began after 12 p.m., was nearing its conclusion.

Minutes later, it started raining cats and dogs, forcing Wike and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, who is to inaugurate the project, running for cover.
The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), was billed to inaugurate the project known as the Dr. Nabo Graham Douglas of the Nigerian Law School.

However, Governor Wike had safely led his special guest and other dignitaries into the auditorium of the law school campus.

The Nigerian Law School, on Tuesday, revealed that 618 intending lawyers that sat for the December 2020 Bar final examinations, failed.

The Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Professor Isah Chiroma, made the disclosure after he presented a total of 880 successful candidates that were confirmed as lawyers during day-one of the Call to Bar Ceremony.

Professor Chiroma said the successful candidates were part of a total of 1,561 students that participated in the examinations.

Nigerian Law School Calls 866 Graduates To Bar

Equally admitted into the Bar on Tuesday were 4 candidates from previous Bar Final Examinations.

However, Prof. Chiroma disclosed that henceforth, law graduates of National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, would be permitted to do special remedial course at the Nigerian Law School.

He said: “The Council of Legal Education, Nigerian Law School have been receiving commendations from stakeholders and the general public for offering Admissions to Law graduates of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) for special remedial course.

“I am also to respectfully inform you all that the programme will commence on Monday June 28, 2021, at the Nigerian Law School Headquarters, Bwari, Abuja”.

In his address, the Chairman of Body of Benchers, Justice Olabode Rhodes-Vivour, implored the new wigs to always uphold the tenets of the rule of law where ever they found themselves.

“As members of a learned and noble profession, you will be required to carry out your duties in a professional manner.

“This entails demonstrating a high sense of civility, honesty, integrity and compliance with laid clown rules and regulations.

“You must commit yourself to the fair administration of justice and to doing your part in facilitating true access to justice.

“Once again, I extend my sincere congratulations to all the new wigs and formally address you as my learned Friends.

“Always remember how much you have laboured in time past and the sacrifices your loved ones have made for you to succeed and strive to exhibit the highest sense of responsibility which the legal profession is known for all over the world.

“Having achieved this milestone, may your lives be forever enriched,” Justice Rhodes-Vivour stated.

He warned that the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, LPDC, would not hesitate to wield the big stick against any lawyer whose conduct “negate the sacrosanct standards of the profession or amount to infamous conduct in a professional respect”.

“The Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee has been carrying out its mandate in a just and fair manner without giving rooms for compromise, affection or ill-will.

“From January to July 2021, three lawyers were disbarred, six lawyers were suspended (ranging from two years to four) and one lawyer was admonished.

“You are therefore advised to be of good behaviour and abide by the ethics and tradition of the profession to avoid being brought before the Committee”, Justice Rhodes-Vivour added.

The Call to Bar ceremony will continue on Wednesday and Thursday.

Nigerian Law School Calls 866 Graduates To Bar

The Nigerian Law School on Tuesday in Abuja called a total of 866 graduates of the school to the Nigerian Bar.

Prof. Isa Ciroma, Director-General of the school, in his address at the ceremony, said that 850 of the candidates were successful after the April 2019 Bar Final Examinations while 16 candidates were from previous Bar Final Examinations.

It will be recalled that the school while releasing the results recently said that a total of 1,680 participated in the Bar Final examinations.

It added that while 850 were successful, 34 had conditional pass mark and 724 failed the examinations.

Ciroma explained that the Council of Legal Education, since 2016 approved that henceforth, resit students for the examinations must undertake two months revision exercise for eligibility to write the examinations.

Recent performance at the examinations, Ciroma said, justified the initiative with a success rate put at 50.60 percent.

Ciroma, who presented the candidates before the Body of Benchers, said that the candidates had successfully completed the vocational training at the school, as prescribed by the Legal Education Act.

“They have all taken the prescribed examinations as well as the dining terms and met all other required conditions set by the Council of Legal Education.”

“I am happy to affirm that they all exhibited good manners and decorum during their training and have also been groomed in the best ethics and ethos of our noble profession.”

“The screening committee of your distinguished body has carefully perused the records of the aspirants and found them worthy to be presented for Call to the Nigerian Bar.”

“I attest that they are fit and proper persons for Call to the Nigerian Bar,” he said.

He urged the graduates to make the best of the profession, while also ensuring strict adherence to its norms and ethics.

While congratulating the graduates, Justice Tanko Mohammed, Chairman, Body of Benchers, urged them to be of good behavior and also maintain the integrity of the profession.

Mohammad, who is also the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), said that the ceremony was evidence of the graduates’ hard work and support from their parents and guardians.

He said: “The journey ahead of you is far more than you have covered, life is expansive, I urge you to spend each day wisely.”

“Too much is expected of lawyers, set your goals and ensure you achieve them because the future of your profession lies in your hands, plan it or it will plan for you and if you allow it plan for you, it may not be the best.”

Mohammad advised the graduates to always uphold the laws of the profession, represent their clients well, avoid the get-rich-quickly syndrome and be diligent.

He said that the graduates must abide by the rules and provisions of the profession which he noted, were sacrosanct and required strict adherence at all times.

He added that where a complaint was made against any practitioner’s conduct, the alleged offense is put side by side the provisions of the Rules of the Professional Conduct and once established, the defaulter is sanctioned accordingly by the disciplinary committee.
