A recent altercation between a lecturer and a student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has sparked an investigation and widespread condemnation. The incident occurred when a 200-level student, identified as Gift, mistakenly entered a lecture room where a class was in progress, thinking it was his own class.
Sources on the campus reported that upon realizing his error, Gift attempted to leave the class, but the lecturer, identified as Dr. Ariyo, called him back. An argument ensued, which eventually escalated into a physical confrontation.
In video footage that circulated online, the incident shows the student and a man presumed to be a security official engaged in a struggle over the student’s phone. The lecturer is heard instructing the student not to make any calls, demanding that the phone be switched off. He is also seen throwing a punch at the student.
The Students’ Union at OAU strongly condemned the incident and demanded the prosecution of the lecturer. They expressed their concern over the lecturer’s actions and called for an open hearing and a public apology from him to the entire student body. The union also called for assurances that the victim and other students in the class would not face any form of victimization.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, also denounced the lecturer’s behavior and stated that the Vice-Chancellor is taking the matter seriously. An administrative probe into the incident has been initiated, with the involvement of the faculty, department, and the lecturer in question. The university administration has called for calm among the students as the investigation proceeds.
