African football icon and president of Liberia, George Weah, has given up to opposition leader Joseph Boakai.
In the hotly contested presidential race, Boakai was leading, according to prior reports from Anaedoonline.ng.
The opposition leader was leading the elections in Liberia, according to the results that were made public, with about 51% of the vote.

Weah, the nation’s election umpire, stated that he was unable to reverse Boakai’s lead, nevertheless, as he continued to declare the results.
“The result announced tonight, though not final, indicates that…Boakai is in a lead that we cannot surpass,” Weah said.
“This is the time for graciousness in defeat,” he added.
The president of Liberia stressed in his speech that although his country did not win the presidential election, the people of Liberia had.
Weah continued by saying he had chatted with Boakai “to congratulate him on his victory.”

He said: “The Liberian people have spoken, and we have heard their voice. However, the closeness of the results reveals a deep division within our country.
“Let us heal the divisions caused by the campaign and come together as one nation and one united people.”
Weah promised to “continue to work for the good of Liberia.” He will serve as president until the transfer of power in January.

After Tuesday’s second round of voting, more than 99.5% of polling places submitted tallies of votes cast, meaning that Boakai had collected 50.89% of the total vote, as reported by the nation’s election umpire.

The election results released on Friday showed that Boakai received 28,000 more votes than Weah. In Tuesday’s poll, the two lawmakers were tied, with Weah leading with just 7,126 votes.
The ascension of Weah to the presidency of Liberia in 2017 ignited the nation’s optimism for progress and constructive transformation. Critics, however, charge that his administration is restricting the rights of the populace and breaking electoral pledges.
