Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, engaged in a private meeting with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and key figures from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja on Monday. Additionally, Obi held separate discussions with former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, and former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, fueling speculation about potential collaborations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Having defected from the PDP to pursue his presidential aspirations with the Labour Party in 2022, Obi’s third-place finish behind Atiku in the February 23 presidential race, won by Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, stirred debates. Atiku attributed his loss to Tinubu partially to Obi’s departure from the PDP.
Analysts suggested that combining Atiku’s 6,984,520 votes and Obi’s 6,101,533 votes could have secured victory over Tinubu, who amassed 8,794,726 votes. This meeting marked the first public encounter between Obi and Atiku since the election.
The circulating images of Obi’s meeting with the PDP leaders sparked discussions online. In the 2019 elections, Atiku and Obi ran on the PDP ticket but were defeated by former President Muhammadu Buhari of the APC. Following internal disputes, Obi, Atiku’s 2019 running mate, departed from the PDP and contested the 2023 presidential race under the Labour Party banner.
Atiku’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, hinted at the possibility of coalition discussions for the 2027 presidential elections. He confirmed Obi and Atiku’s closed-door meeting, lasting approximately 20 minutes, emphasizing that the details of their discussions were not disclosed. This secrecy aligns with their intention to handle such matters privately.
