According to former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, Africans’ only option is to help return the debt that their current leaders have accumulated.
Obasanjo achieved debt relief for Nigeria in 2003 while serving as president; at the same time, his Algerian counterpart took a similar action.
Obasanjo emphasised the widespread mismanagement that has taken place despite the prior debt write-offs, making it extremely difficult for any administration to get a comparable relief in the continent.
UPDATE: Peter Obi Remains Candidate For A Better Nigeria – Obasanjo
Speaking at a programme for engagement with the 2023 Future Africa Leaders Foundation recipients, which Pastor Chris Oyakhilome organised, Obasanjo referred to these debts as a dangerous trap that people should avoid since they are a major hindrance to any economy.
Focusing on leadership as the main issue facing the continent, Obasanjo declared that future generations will eventually have to pay back the debts that different African nations have accrued to date.
In order to overcome the leadership crisis plaguing the continent, he urged more people to be like Pastor Oyakhilome, praising him for his efforts in developing leaders.
Obasanjo listed the essential characteristics of a leader during the Q&A period. These included setting a good example, acting boldly and courageously when making decisions, accepting responsibility for mistakes and growing from them, and having a realistic outlook on the future.
