The Department of State Services, DSS, sealed all roads leading to the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday, ahead of the resumption of Nnamdi Kanu’s trial as the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

The DSS is thought to have shut the roads near the courthouse to increase security.

Kanu is scheduled to appear in court before Justice Binta Nyako to continue his 15-count terrorist and criminal accusation.

The Nigerian government brought the allegations against him.

However, according to sources, Justice Tosho, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, ordered a secret trial in all terrorist cases.

As a result, Kanu’s case may be sent to the Code of Conduct Tribunal, or CCT.

Meanwhile, Justice Nyako is expected to rule on Kanu’s fundamental human rights suit against the Federal Government.

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has been refused permission to change his clothing by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Kanu’s lawyer, stated that the DSS had ignored all attempts by Kanu’s family to change his attire.

After a regular meeting with the IPOB leader at the DSS headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, he issued a statement.

The DSS rejection, according to Ejiofor, constituted a flagrant breach of court orders.

In addition, the attorney stated that his client was refused sufficient medical care in the DSS facility.

Kanu’s health, according to Ejiofor, is rapidly worsening.

The statement reads partly: “Consistent with the usual practice of the DSS personnel, they have continued to rebuff every attempt at ensuring that Onyendu has a change of clothing. The lawless DSS personnel bluntly rejected all clothing brought by our client’s relatives, again, in clear violation of the extant orders of the court.

“In line with the court’s directives, we meticulously ensured that the new clothing met the specifications of the court, and consequently beat the DSS to their games, so that by Friday, they will have no excuse to give to the court for deliberately flouting the positive orders of the court.

“We also observed with dismay, as Onyendu’s impeccable account revealed, that he is not receiving proper medical attention in the custody of the DSS as his health condition is gradually deteriorating.”

Kanu is billed to appear before Justice Binta Nyako-Federal High court today, Friday.

Justice Nyako is expected to rule on Kanu’s fundamental human rights violation suit against the Nigerian Government.

The IPOB leader has been in DSS detention after he was arrested in Kenya and repatriated to Nigeria in June, 2021.

HURIWA, the Nigerian Human Rights Writers Association, has condemned President Muhammadu Buhari’s plan to trial Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in secret.

During the week, the Federal High Court issued new Practice Directions on the trial of terrorism-related matters in the nation.

Terrorism-related cases, like as the one involving Nnamdi Kanu, would henceforth be tried in secret.

High Court Moves Nnamdi Kanu’s Case To CCT, Orders Secret Trial In Terrorism Charges

Media coverage may be forbidden unless the Chief Judge of the Court granted permission.

The Practice Directions were issued by Justice John Terhemba Tsoho, the Chief Judge of the Court, in execution of his constitutional powers as entrenched in section 254 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and all other authorities permitting him.

HURIWA cautioned that this decision will exacerbate the security situation in the South East, adding that the Federal Government took this step because they knew they had nothing against IPOB leader.

In a statement signed by Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, its National Coordinator, HURIWA said, “Secret trial for the leader of the now proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) after he was abducted forcefully from Kenya by Nigeria’s secret services in collaboration with their Kenyan counterparts, after being subjected to horrendous ordeals and illegal rendition, which offends relevant international humanitarian laws, is unconstitutional, primitive, illegal and obnoxious.

“it is as if Nigeria is back to the days of military tribunal whereby citizens were simply chopped off the streets and made to face organised trial with predetermined outcome.

“The decision on the Nnamdi Kanu’s case is totally unlawful and irregular. If government believes it has a case against him, which is very doubtful, why is government afraid of the light and has chosen to try him in the dark?

“This may escalate the security situation in the South East because most people will see this as not been transparent, open and justifiably carried out.

“Whatever outcome from such a secret trial is ab initio null, void and of no moment.

On Monday, Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, reacted to rumors that the Federal High Court in Abuja was contemplating moving his client’s trial location.

Kanu’s trial, according to Ejimakor, should be moved to the Federal High Court’s Umuahia division.

Ejimakor told Newsmen that because the IPOB commander last lived in Abia State, the trial should be moved to Umuahia, the state capital.

He was responding to remarks made by Justice John Tsoho, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, on the prospect of moving Kanu’s trial to a different location.

The decision was made to avoid the interruption of other current matters in court during Kanu’s trial, according to Justice Tosho.

Before Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja Federal High Court, the IPOB leader is charged with terrorism.

During Kanu’s court appearances, the courthouse is generally surrounded by the agitator’s supporters, who are accompanied by a large security presence.

During Kanu’s sessions, security personnel frequently prohibit other lawyers from entering the courtroom.

This had irritated Justice Tsoho, prompting him to contemplate moving Kanu’s trial to a another location.

The Special Counsel stressed that Abuja has no territorial connection with the crimes levelled against the IPOB leader.

According to Ejimakor: “If the Federal High Court overrules the objections to its jurisdiction and persists with the trial, then the venue should be shifted to the Umuahia division of the Federal High Court, because that is where Nnamdi Kanu last resided before he was pursued to Kenya and renditioned.

“Abuja has no territorial connection with the offenses alleged. The alleged offences are entirely in Southeast.

Commercial operations in Onitsha, Nnewi, Awka, and other cities in Anambra State were halted on Wednesday as a result of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra’s sit-at-home home order.

Due to the order, significant businesses like as banks, car parks, fuel stations, marketplaces, schools, and roadside stores were closed, according to Anaedoonline.ng.

In several regions, it was difficult to spot even pedestrians because all highways in the cities named were empty of motor traffic.

IPOB Sit-at-home: We’re Getting Poorer – Anambra Residents Lament

Even the various police and military checkpoints surrounding Anambra, according to a source, were vacant, as was the River Niger Bridge in Onitsha, which is normally a hive of activity on a typical day.

Though the IPOB had called off the Monday sit at home, people in the southeast have continued to observe it.

The group said official days for the sit at home would only be days when its leader, Nnamdi Kanu would be taken to court.

It was, however, gathered that Kanu’s matter in Abuja was on Wednesday adjourned to Thursday. This may lead to another round of sit at home, which will make it three days in just one week.

Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial: Finally DSS Bows To judge’s Order Over Court Premises

On Wednesday, the Department of State Services (DSS) followed the instruction of a Federal High Court in Abuja not to block the court premises and surroundings ahead of the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

According to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN), the trial judge, Binta Nyako, who scheduled today’s hearing at 1 p.m., instructed the DSS officials to tell their headquarters about her suggestion.

Despite the fact that Nyako did not expressly issue an order prohibiting the security firm from carrying out such an act, she stated that doing so would allow the court’s work to continue.

Early in the morning, a check of the court revealed that FHC workers, attorneys, litigants, and media, among others, had unrestricted access to the high-rise structure and its environs.

There was also unrestricted mobility of individuals and vehicles within and outside the court at the time of submitting the report.

According to NAN, the judge directed the DSS on Jan. 19 not to take over the court’s security arrangements until 12 p.m.

When Kanu’s trial on terrorist charges continues, the judge directed DSS to take control of the court security setup.

Nyako had stated that trials of other cases are hindered each time Kanu’s trial takes place due to high security presence and closure of roads leading to the court.

She then shifted the terrorism trial till 1 pm to ensure that other cases are accommodated.

Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial: NUJ Reacts Over Attack on Journalists, Others

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned security agents over attacks on journalists and activists during the trial of leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, on Wednesday.

In a statement by Emmanuel Ogbeche and Ochiaka Ugwu, chairman and secretary respectively, the group described the attack as reprehensible and posing a grave danger to the safety of journalists and democracy.

The union berated security operatives for failure to act in the face of violence and aggression against journalists.

Recall that pro-government thugs attacked human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, and other IPOB supporters at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday.

The NUJ said several journalists were injured during Wednesday’s attack while several equipment including cameras were destroyed.

The statement reads, “We at the NUJ FCT Council find it objectionable, reprehensible and a great disservice that suspected hoodlums will attack journalists and activists who were on their legitimate endeavours at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

“It is even more saddening that during the unwarranted attack on journalists and activists by these dangerous, armed welding elements, officers and men of various security agencies watched idly and did not stop the violence and arrest the perpetrators.”

The union further stated that the continued sanctioning of violence against journalists in the country posed a grave danger to democracy as it constricts the civic space and is an attempt to silence credible voices and media on issues of human rights, good governance and the rule of law.

The union charged security agencies to prove that the disgraceful conduct was not state sponsored by ensuring that “the cameras of Reuters News Agency that was stolen by hoodlums was retrieved, while all elements that are linked to the orgy of violence are found, arrested and prosecuted”.

The statement also noted that if there was unfettered access by journalists to the court, the incident would have been avoided.
