In the capital of Yobe State, Damaturu, young protestors have demolished billboards that welcomed President Bola Tinubu to the region for the Yobe Agricultural Empowerment Program’s opening.

President Tinubu was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the program’s debut in Damaturu on Saturday.

The plan is the cornerstone of the administration’s continuous attempts to improve food security, generate employment, and diversify Nigeria’s economy through agriculture, according to the president’s envoy.

Using the phrase “food is the heart of security in every society,” the president emphasised the vital role that agriculture plays in both national development and security.

But following the launch, young people in the state were seen scaling billboards featuring images of Tinubu, Shettima, and Governor Mai Buni in a now-viral video that was posted on X.

The banner bearing the prescription was torn out by the irate youths who vandalised it.

FAAN, CBN Relocation: Sack Keyamo, Cardoso Now, Northern Youths Tell Tinubu

Some young people in the north have strongly advised Bola Tinubu to fire Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor Yemi Cardoso and Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo as soon as possible, according to a statement released on Thursday by Murtala Abubakar, convener of the Joint Action Committee of Northern Youth Associations.

This request is in reaction to the important departments and an agency they oversee being scheduled to relocate.

 

The group’s director of gender mobilisation, Latifa Abdussalam, and director of public communication and strategy, Hashim Tom Maiyashi, co-signed the communiqué, which expressed gratitude to the Senate’s Northern Caucus for their position on the issue. But the organisation pushed the MPs to go it a step further and demand Keyamo and Cardoso’s immediate dismissal.

The group recommended that lawmakers give President Tinubu a deadline to stop the relocation instead of suing the president to overturn the decision.

The group stated, “Given the magnitude of the decisions by the CBN and FAAN that demonstrate the unsuitability of their chief executives to preside over federal institutions, we urge our representatives to demand the immediate removal of the Governor of the CBN and the Minister of Aviation from their positions.

This is not a punitive action, but rather a necessary step to reestablish public confidence, guarantee accountability, and protect the constitutional integrity of important institutions that have a substantial impact on the administrative and economic landscape of our country.

 

“We call on our representatives in the National Assembly to exercise their full legislative oversight functions. We urge them to set a definite deadline for the executive to rescind the decisions related to the relocation of CBN departments and FAAN headquarters as well as to take proactive corrective measures.”

Arewa Youths Raises Alarm Over Planned WAEC CBT, Says It Will Cause Mass Failure In North

The computer-based test (CBT) for the next West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has been rejected by the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF).

Anaedoonline.ng notes that WAEC has declared its intention to begin using CBT-based testing in its exams in 2024.

The association claimed in a statement released on Saturday and signed by its president, Yerima Shettima, that such an exam format will cause a great deal of failure among Northern students, particularly those from rural areas who lack computer literacy.

According to him, WAEC ought to make it optional and provide applicants the alternative between the computer-based method and the conventional pen and paper format.

According to Shettima, these choices would enable students to select the exam format that best suits their comfort level.

According to Shettima, the choice must be made quickly in order to stop a high percentage of pupils failing out when they should have equal and fair chances to succeed.

He stated that studies carried out by the AYCF in a few northern states, including Zamfara, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Nasarawa, and Plateau, demonstrated that students enrolled in public schools, where computer literacy is frequently lacking, have regularly performed poorly on the CBT tests.

He said: “Even the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) CBT exams have placed underprivileged students in a predicament, as they struggle to answer questions in a format they are unfamiliar with.

“Many students who failed the CBT-based JAMB exams last year argued that their failures were a result of systemic failures, including insufficient facilities or network failures during the exams.

“Additionally, a lack of proper and adequate computer skills, coupled with outdated desktop computers that are not properly maintained by CBT centres further exacerbate the situation.

“As the exams are timed, these delays significantly hinder the performance of students who otherwise possess sufficient knowledge of the content.

“In the light of these findings, the AYCF urgently calls upon the Ministry of Education, Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), and other relevant Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to unite and reject the planned CBT exams.”

The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has warned against the Federal Government’s proposal to eliminate fuel subsidies.

The Council’s President, Isa Abubakar, underlined the group’s opposition to the anticipated withdrawal of fuel subsidies in June in a statement issued in Kaduna on Thursday.

The group warned that the anticipated withdrawal of fuel subsidies would have a disastrous impact on the already suffering economy and the Nigerian people, and that such a move would be opposed.

They also urged the government to focus on policies that would create jobs and stimulate economic growth, warning that anyone who conspired to plunge Nigerians into an avoidable crisis would face serious political consequences.

The statement added: “We cannot afford to have another round of hardship inflicted on the Nigerian people, especially the youth who are already grappling with high unemployment rates and a lack of opportunities.

“They should remember how some powerful governors were humiliated in the recently concluded election and understand that power now rests on the thumbs of Nigerians. Nigerians won’t forget.

Court Jail Ado Doguwa Over Alleged Murder, Northern Group Makes A Passionate Appeal

The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has asked that Alhassan Ado Doguwa, a member of the House of Representatives, who was detained for alleged murder, face the full force of the law.

The group made the demand after the legislator was captured and accused of funding thugs who killed innocent Kano residents during the recent elections.

Doguwa was allegedly involved in a violent clash between supporters of the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) that resulted in the death of three individuals and the destruction of the opposition party’s campaign office in Kano state’s Tudun Wada Local Government Area.

The House Majority Leader was remanded in a jail facility on Wednesday after a Kano State Magistrates’ Court ruled him guilty of culpable homicide and arson.

According to this news outlet, Doguwa was detained on Tuesday at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport before being hauled to Court 58 of the Magistrate’s Court in the state capital’s Nomansland district on Wednesday evening.

Following the reading of the First Information Report, the magistrate, Ibrahim Yola, ordered Doguwa’s remand. Judge then postponed the hearing until March 7.

Abdullahi Kiyawa, the state police spokesperson, revealed after the verdict that the lawmaker was arrested and charged with murder.

But, in a statement made on Thursday, NYCN national president Isah Abubakar stated that they cannot be idle when it comes to the rights, privileges, freedom, and tranquility of the North.

He said: “We must all come out in full force to put a stop to a long-time tyranny and rape of democracy demonstrated by the unscrupulous dishonourable Ado Doguwa over the years.”

According to the youth leader, records reveal that Ado Doguwa illegally mobilized thugs due to a political difference, thereby forcibly imposing himself to be declared winner in an election marked by vote buying and voter intimidation.

The statement further explained, “His (Ado Doguwa) arrest has shown the power of the law over any other power, and has also brought an end to the era of fear, intimidation and all kinds of abuses of political power.”

The youths prayed that he (Ado Doguwa) be fully prosecuted according to the alleged crime committed.

“We shall keep vigilant on the whole prosecution to monitor how the judiciary play their role in sanitising our political system,” Abubakar said.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, has warned Nigerian youths not to be fooled by political parties that have held them in poverty in the past.

Obi delivered the rebuke on Sunday during the party’s presidential campaign rally at Kano Pillars Stadium.

Ahead of the upcoming presidential election next month, Osita Chidoka, a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP chieftain, has stated that the challenges of youths in the Southern and Northern portions of the country are distinct, adding that they (northern youths) will vote for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Chidoka further claimed that no one in the North moved during the EndSars protest because it was not a concern for them.

He made the statement while answering questions on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics program on Sunday.

According to the former aviation minister, there is no national youth movement that might influence votes in favor of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

He said, “Let me take something like the youth votes. There are 37 million people between the ages of 18 and 35. Of these 37 million people, nine (9) million of them are in the Northwest, 26%. So there is no national youth movement. 4.1 million of them are in the Southeast 11%. Obi can’t sway those votes.

“The issues before the youths in the South and youths in the North are different. So when we were talking about EndSars, nobody in the North moved because this is not a problem for them.”

Young people in the north who support Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, over Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have cautioned Ulama in the north who are using their houses of worship to speak about the crisis to stop immediately or they will be exposed.

In a press conference held in Kano, the youths who go by the name “Northern Youths Up For Wike” said that if Islamic clerics and imams, particularly those from the North, are interested in politics, they should openly join a party but for the time being should stay out of the Wike-Atiku crises because it is not within their purview.

The youngsters reminded Governor Wike that his opposition to the North producing both the PDP chairman and its presidential candidate in 2023 was not intended to prevent a northerner from winning the presidency.

Alhaji Abduljabbar Rufai made the claim on Thursday at a press conference held at the Grand Central Hotel in Kano. He hinted that the Wike camp is fighting injustice and unfair treatment done to the Southern part of the country by denying the region the national chairmanship position because the North has been given the presidential position.

According to him: “The national chairman of the party, Senator Iyochia Ayu has proven not to be trustworthy to Nigerians because he promised us, we the members of the PDP, to resign his position, should a northerner emerged as party flagbearer, but now he is making excuses.”

He said further: “The issue of the national chairman, has proven that Atiku lacks the ability to adequately assess internal issues and relationship management and these are skills that a leader must possess to tackle problems like the ASUU strike.”

He then declared: “On behalf of the entire team of Wike’s Voice up North, an initiative with the main objective of supporting and defending Wike against those that are trying to make PDP a regional party, [contrary to the] provisions of the PDP Constitution [which] was deliberately made the way it is, to promote equity and fairness in the party structure, we want to commend Gov Wike and show our tireless support for his political principles because he has earned our trust.

He noted that Wike “is the strongest pillar in today’s PDP…Therefore this agitation is not about him, but for the benefit of the party in general.”

He pointed out that Wike has demonstrated his party devotion beyond any shadow of a doubt by remaining a member, unlike other party members who left in 2014.

Rufai then urged all parties involved to act swiftly by requesting Senator Ayu to honorably resign from his position as the party’s national chairman and make way for a southern candidate to take over.

Yerima Shettima, National President of the Forum, described Nnamdi Kanu as a monster who must face the full wrath of the law, insisting that releasing him would be a sign of government weakness and could be interpreted to mean that the government was afraid of Kanu and that security agencies were overwhelmed by one man.

Northern youths, united under the banner of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), have urged the Nigerian government against releasing Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The Forum urged the government to be prepared to pay a high price for any northerners slain in the South-East purportedly by IPOB members, as they (AYCF) will seek compensation for those killed and their people whose businesses and property were destroyed in the region, amounting to billions of naira.

The Northern youths also threatened that if the government released Kanu, they would use his case as a model for any future crime, and that the government should be prepared to accept full responsibility for any future results.

In an interview with Newsmen, the Forum’s National President, Yerima Shettima, described Kanu as a monster who must face the full wrath of the law, insisting that releasing him would show a sign of weakness on the part of the government and could be interpreted as the government being afraid of Kanu and security agencies being overwhelmed by one man.

Shettima said, “Release Nnamdi Kanu because the Nigerian Government is afraid of him? Release him because Nigerian security has been overwhelmed by these criminals going about killing people like Northerners who go to that region to conduct their legitimate business? No, it’s not done in any society; all they need to do is to buckle up and face the monster.

“The law must take its full course as they go around unleashing terror on innocent Nigerians, including their own people, the law must be allowed to take its full course. We can’t be blackmailed, we are not cowards, and Nigerians can’t be cowards by a few individuals.

“If the government or the court, in their magnanimity, decide to find safe ground, they should bear in mind that they will demand that the lives of Northerners killed in broad daylight by these criminals be compensated.

“We already have files and documentation of Northerners killed and properties destroyed because we will demand compensation from the government for the people we have lost, billions lost; the government must be ready to pay.

PDP Crisis: Northern Youths Asks Ayu To Be Honourable And Resign

The national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, has been asked by the leadership of the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) to view the request for his resignation as an opportunity to serve.

The NYCN noted that when a Southerner becomes the party’s chairman, Ayu’s resignation or stepping down as the PDP’s national chairman would give the party a face of equity and fairness.

Isah Abubakar, National President of NYCN, in a statement issued in Kaduna on Saturday and made available to Newsmen said, “We plead with Ayu to understand the concept of justice and equity, the spirit of oneness, to be patriotic enough to save the party from losing the 2023 general elections and resign. Nigerians and the entire country will be grateful if Ayu considers resignation.”

The youths added, “The PDP is know as a National party but with the emergency of Atiku Abubakar as the party’s flagbearer in 2023 and the continuity of Ayu chairmanship, a lot of people will see the party as a regional political party; this is a bad reputation for the party and it is unacceptable to all party faithful.”

“If this is the only thing that will maintain peace and grant the party victory in the elections, Ayu should do so for the victory of the party and interest of all Nigerians,” the statement pleaded.
