Ondo State Police Arrest Man for Attempted Murder Over Love Rival

The Ondo State police have detained 43-year-old Mr. Ajagba Joseph on charges of attempting to murder a man he discovered in his concubine’s house. The arrest was announced by the Ondo State Police Command in a statement shared on X.com.

The alleged crime took place on August 23 when Joseph visited the home of his lover and encountered another man, who was also involved with the same woman. In a fit of rage, Joseph reportedly pulled out a single-barrel gun and shot the other man.

Fortunately, the victim survived the attack and is currently recovering from his injuries. The police statement clarified that Joseph will be charged with attempted murder once the investigation is completed.

The statement detailed the events as follows: “Attempted Murder – This married man, Mr. Ajagba Joseph, aged 43, on August 23rd went to his concubine’s house and found another man there. He became enraged and shot the other man with his single-barrel gun. The victim is recuperating, and the suspect is in custody and will soon face court charges.”

Father And Daughter Detained For Ondo Cleric’s Abduction

Police have detained three people, including a father and daughter, in connection with the kidnapping of a Muslim cleric named Alhaji Ibra Alli Bodunde in the state of Ondo.

The 67-year-old priest was abducted last month while working on his farm. He is the Chief Imam of the Uso Community in the state’s Owo Local Government Area.
He apparently paid the N2 million ransom the next day and was freed.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami, parading the suspects at the command headquarters in Akure, the state’s capital, said the arrests were made as a result of the rapid action of the command’s agents.

According to her, the suspects include Muinah Mohammed, Aisha Bello and Isah Bello.

NCC Warns Nigerians -‘Don’t Share Phone, SIM Cards’

She said, “On June 18, 2023, one Mrs Bodunde, around 6pm, went to the Uso Division to complain that her husband, Alli Bodunde, went to the farm and he was supposed to come back around 2pm but unfortunately when they did not see him, they sent two persons to the farm to look for him.

“When they got to the farm, they saw his car and his mobile phone but they could not see him. Immediately after the case was reported, the police swung into action and at the end of the day, the man was released.
“But during the investigation, we realised that the man in question is the Chief Imam of the Uso community and through our intelligence team we were able to arrest the suspects.”

One of the suspects, Isah Bello, said his accomplice, Mohammed, collected his SIM card from his daughter, Aisha, and the SIM card was used to call the victim’s family for negotiation for the ransom.
Bello said, “My daughter (Aisha) came to me to collect my other SIM card from me. I asked what she wanted to use the SIM card for, and she didn’t give me any serious answer but since I don’t use the SIM card any longer, I gave it to her.

“I didn’t know what they used the SIM card for. I don’t know this boy (Mohammed). I didn’t know anything about the matter. I was not arrested, it was my people that told me about the matter, so I went to report myself at the Area Command office.”
On her part, Aisha admitted that she gave her father’s SIM card to Mohammed but claimed to be oblivious to the purpose for which he collected the SIM card.
Odunlami said the suspects would soon be charged in court at the end of the investigation.

Three Health Workers Detained Over Missing Placenta In Ondo Hospital

Three medical personnel at the Emure-Ile Comprehensive Health Center in Ondo State’s Owo council area have been detained in connection with the suspected disappearance of the placenta of a newborn delivered there.

The hospital staff failed to give the placenta to the baby’s father, Tunde Ijanusi, 23, after the baby was delivered, and he raised concern.

Speaking about the unpleasant experience, the baby’s paternal grandmother, Mrs. Funmilayo Ijanusi, said hospital staff said a dog broke into the building and stole the placenta.

The hospital staff also convinced the family not to be concerned about the development, according to Mrs. Ljanusi.

According to her” when we insisted that they should produce the placenta, they begged us not to make an issue out of it since it’s not their fault that dog came into the health centre and took away the placenta.

” It was when we realized that they were hiding something that we reported the matter at the police station.

” They should produce the placenta. Because we learnt that they sell it to some people who use it for spiritual purposes.

Vanguard gathered that three health workers were later arrested for questioning after the matter was reported by the parents of the baby.

Reacting to the incident, the state chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has absolved its members from the alleged missing placenta of a newborn baby at the Health Centre in Owo.

Its Chairman of the Association, Comrade Kehinde Olomiye, said that “the two health workers and security man apprehended in connection with the stolen placenta, were not qualified nurses and not members of the association.

Olomiye asked the police and the hospital authorities to carry out a thorough investigation of the incident to prevent a recurrence.
Reacting, the spokesperson for the state police command, Funmi Odunlami, confirmed that three persons have been arrested in connection with the missing placenta.

Odunlami said that police detectives are interrogating the suspects and if found culpable would be charged in court.

She declined to give the identities of the suspects being interrogated by police detectives.

Four Remanded For Examination Malpractices In Ondo Court

On Tuesday, a Federal High Court in Akure, Ondo State, remanded four people for impersonation and exam irregularities in the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board exam.

The defendants are Feranmi Adesuyi, Peter Okereke, Olayinka Mustapha, and Timilehin Akinwale.
According to the prosecution, Moses Osimhen, the first three defendants; Akinwale, Mustapha and Okereke committed the offence of impersonation on February 15, 2023, during the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination at a Computer-Based Test centre located at Aina Awaw International College, Ilu Abo, Akure while Adesuyi committed the said offence on April 28 at Amable Nigeria Limited CBT Centre in Owo, during the 2023 JAMB examination.

Osimhen told the court that the offences were contrary to Section 3(3)(c) of the Examination Malpractices Act, Cap E15, LFN, 2004 and punishable under the same section.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

The prosecutor prayed the court to remand the suspects pending the date for the hearing.

The defendants’ counsel, Clement Falana and Austin Agbounghale, pleaded for the court to grant their clients bail, stating that the offences committed by the defendants were bailable.

But the presiding judge, Justice T. B. Adegoke, granting the prosecutor’s plea, ordered the suspects to be remanded at the Olokuta Custodial Centre and adjourned the case till July 12, 2023, for hearing.

Corruption: EFCC Charges Ondo Speaker, Two Others With Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has charged the speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Bamidele Oloyeloogun, and two others in connection with an alleged N2.4 million fraud involving the Assembly before the state High Court in Akure.

Their arraignment came after an Akure High Court in Ondo state ruled that it had jurisdiction over the proceedings.

As a result, the three politicians and one civil worker were arraigned before Justice Adegboyega Adebusoye for suspected fraud following the dismissal of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) preliminary objection filed against their trial.
The grant (N 2.4 million) was intended for a seminar that parliamentarians and public servants were supposed to attend but did not.

Two others arraigned on a two-count charge of fraud, alongside the Speaker include Hon Felemu Bankole, representing Akoko South-West Constituency 2, and a civil servant, Segun Oyadeyi Bankole

They however pleaded not guilty to the allegations level against them.

At the commencement of the trial, the counsel to the EFCC, Kingsley Kudus, asked the court to remand the defendants at the Olokuta Correctional Facility.

But reacting, counsel to the defendants, Femi Emodamore, asked the court to strike out EFCC’s prayer for remand, arguing that the administrative bail application on the defendants was still active.

Emodamore said that the second defendant (Oleyelogun) was having a health challenge that needed urgent medical attention.

He equally asked the court to caution the nominal complainant( the former deputy speaker, Iroju Ogundeji) in the case for allegedly sending messages to the speaker in an attempt to annoy him.

According to him, “if Ogundeji did not desist from such action, he would be prosecuted as his actions towards the speaker is against the law.

In his ruling, Justice Adegboyega Adebusoye asked the defendants to be enjoying their administrative bail till the next hearing date

Justice Adebusoye, therefore, adjourned the case till May 18 for a proper hearing of the trial.

Recall, that When the case came up for hearing in February, this year, the lawmakers, argued that the EFCC lacked the power to prosecute offences affecting the finances and assets of the state as there exists a law enacted by the Assembly to tackle corruption allegations in the state.

The defendants in the preliminary objection filed to the EFCC charges by their counsel, Mr Femi Emodamori asked the Court to decline Jurisdiction and strike out the charges against them because the EFCC has no right to prosecute them as the assets they were facing trial for belonged to the state.

Emodamore said the EFCC has no right to prosecute the defendants for alleged corruption in view of the State Public Complaint Financial Crimes and Anti Corruption Commission Law passed into law and signed by Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu in January 2022.

But, the Counsel to the EFCC then, Mr Fredrick Dibang, said that the court has jurisdiction, because, the State law enacted by the state Assembly is contrary to the acts of the National Assembly that establish EFCC and once there is a conflict between the law of a state and that of the National Assembly, the law of the state is suspended.

Group Seeks Permission To Prosecute Okorocha

Dibang said the Assembly passed the law with the intention of frustrating the trial of the lawmakers and the civil servant for the alleged abuse of office and corruption.

However, in his ruling, Justice Adebusoye put the state law in abeyance and held that the EFCC has the power to investigate and prosecute the lawmakers for the alleged fraud, which they were charged with.
Adebusoye said “The offences against the defendants are not state offences promulgated by the state legislation but a federal offence, having being promulgated by the national assembly, though relates to finances of Ondo state.

“Without wasting the time of this court, it settles that the complainant is empowered to investigate and prosecute the three defendants on the two counts charge as stated in the information file, being federal offences and even though the alleged ones involved belong to the Ondo state government.”

The Judge, therefore, dismissed the preliminary objection as filed by the defendants and assumed jurisdiction to adjudicate on this matter.

Farmers Fight Government Of Ondo Over Eviction

A private company recently forced over 100 farmers in Ondo State’s Oluwa Forest Reserve to leave their land, and they have accused the state administration of manipulating their misery.

Farmers claim that the state government gave their acreage to the firm without including them in the process.

They claim that despite paying a N5 million annual tax to the state government on the land, farmers in over seven separate settlements with 45 camps have been driven from their land by the state government’s actions.

Gunmen Kidnap Four Farmers, Demand N50m Ransom

The firm that purchased their lands, according to their representative, Mr. Adetoro Opeyemi, assaulted their farms with earthmoving equipment and uprooted their cocoa trees, the majority of which were bursting with seedlings.

He said: “In my camp, we have paid annual dues of N5 million to the government.We are surprised that our farmlands of over 20 years could be sold to an investor to plant what we already have in the farm.“““So, we are begging the government to consider our plight and look for somewhere else for the private investors to plant their palm trees.“It will surprise you to know that two farmers died recently out of frustration, after their cocoa plantations were destroyed,”

But the state government, in response, described the farmers in the forest reserves as illegal occupants.

The commissioner for information and orientation, Mrs. Bamidele Ademola- Olateju, insisted that government will not allow farming and hunting in its forest reserves any longer.

NDE Trains Unemployed Ondo Women On Shoe, Bag Making

In Ondo state, the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has begun training for women in shoe and bag production.

The Director General of the Directorate, Mallam Abubakar Nuhu Fikpo, stated during the training’s inauguration ceremony that the goal was to increase the capacity of women in job creation and reduce the country’s unemployment rate.

Mr Olusegun Adelodun, the Ondo State Coordinator of NDE, represented Fikpo at Akure, the state capital.
“The first phase of the training was simultaneously held in the 19 Northern States and the FCT between the 27th and 31st March 2023,” he says, adding that the second phase is now underway in the country’s 17 southern states.

“In all, a total of Seven Hundred and Forty (740) women have been selected nationwide at the rate of Twenty (20) women per state.

“The Women Employment Branch (WEB), a platform of the Small Scale Enterprises Department is responsible for undertaking this training that is commencing today which the objective is to design income generating activities for women in order to generate mass employment and reduce poverty amongst women.

“In line with this, I am glad to inform you that in the year 2022, the Directorate through WEB kick-started the training in income-generating activities in skills such as Decorative Painting Making, Embroidery (stone/beads on clothes), Perfumery, Organic Products, Extraction of Natural Organic oil, Spice/ Seasoning Production, Turban (Headgear) making, Event Decoration, Makeup & Gele and Rafia Works.

“The products and services emanating from these skills are in high demand, therefore we expect our beneficiaries to be doing well in their current endeavours.

Fikpo said that the Directorate through its intervention programmes and schemes had created over one million direct jobs for women of all categories through skills acquisition and entrepreneurial training opportunities.

He added that the directorate has also, provided a platform for women who have benefitted from its numerous skills acquisition trainings to gain international exposure and network through participation in local and international Trade Fairs.

He called on the beneficiaries of the training to listen attentively to their trainers and practice whatever they were being taught, at home.

According to him, “Do not let your domestic duties serve as a distraction to you; create time to practice, as practice makes perfection.

“Ultimately, it is my desire that you become self-employed thereby increasing the wealth and dignity of your family.”

Fuel Tanker Explodes On The Ore-Benin Expressway In Ondo State

On Wednesday, a fuel-laden tanker exploded on the Ore-Benin Expressway in Ore, Ondo State’s Odigbo Local Government Area.
It was the second such explosion in the area in nine days, when a kerosene tanker burst into flames on Jan. 31, frying the driver, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

Mr Sikiru Alonge, Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Ore, who confirmed the two explosions, said Wednesday’s tanker driver escaped unharmed and no lives were lost in the incident.

He blamed the mishap on the driver’s loss of control of the vehicle due to a burst tyre.

Alonge said efforts were being made to put out the fire and that the FRSC personnel had been deployed to the area to ease traffic congestion.
“The explosion occurred because of a burst tyre. This made the tanker to wobble and spill its content on the road leading to flames and later, the explosion.

Two Confirmed Dead In Another Tanker Explosion

“There is no loss of life in the incident. We are collaborating with the Fire Station in Ondo town to help to put out the fire, since there is no fire service station in Ore.
“We have also deployed our personnel to the area to control traffic so as to ease traffic congestion,’’ Alonge said.

He urged motorists, especially drivers of articulated vehicles to always put their vehicles in good order before taking them to the highway.

The Ondo State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, has received praise from Labour Party presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi for his dedication to guaranteeing the protection of the lives and property of the state’s residents through the Amotekun state security agency.

“Arm those special security poeple. Take every step to protect your people. It is important and it is your duty. I’m happy that you are speaking out always when necessary. May God Almighty continue to be with you and bless all of you.”

While condoling the governor over the death of his mother, the LP presidential candidate prayed to God to grant the deceased eternal rest.

Responding, Governor Akeredolu expressed his appreciation to Obi and his entourage for finding time to visit him.

On the death of his mother, the governor said she would surely be missed even though she left at the ripe age of 90.

He expressed joy that all her late mother’s children survived her, saying she would be given a glorious and befitting burial.
