Will Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday after slapping Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife, Jada, during the Oscars.

Smith claimed he was heartbroken because he not only breached the Academy’s trust but also denied other candidates and award recipients the ability to enjoy and be honored for their exceptional work in a statement released in reaction to the Academy.
