Candidates of the major political parties in Imo State were notably absent at the peace accord meeting organized by the National Peace Committee in Owerri, the state capital, in preparation for the November 11 governorship election.
Imo State Governor and APC candidate, Hope Uzodimma, Labour Party’s Athan Achonu, APGA’s Tony Ejiogu, and New Nigeria Peoples Party’s Ben Odunze were all no-shows at the event. Although Uzodimma, Achonu, and Anyanwu sent their running mates, the organizers did not allow proxy signatures.
The chairmen of APC and LP signed the documents on behalf of their candidates. The candidates of smaller parties, including the Social Democratic Party, Action Democratic Party, and Action Alliance, attended and signed the peace accord.
Uzodinma’s running mate, Chinyere Ekomaru, was not allowed to sign, while Achonu’s running mate, Tony Nwulu, was also denied the opportunity. Running mate Jones Onyereri, representing the PDP candidate, left the event as the major party candidates were not present.
It was later announced that the candidates who missed the ceremony could sign the documents at the state Commissioner of Police’s office on Thursday.
The Deputy Inspector General Of Police, Frank Mba, and other senior security agents were present during the ceremony, which was heavily secured.
