Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Completes Modular Refinery and Advances Artisanal Refiner Training

The Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), a division of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, has announced the successful completion of its modular refinery with the intention to expand its capacity for commercial purposes. Situated in Effurun, Delta State, the PTI also mentioned that it’s providing training to artisanal refiners in the skills necessary for crude oil refining.

Adebowale Adimula, the Chief Executive of PTI, shared these details during a press conference in Abuja ahead of the 3rd Biennial International Conference on Hydrocarbon Science & Technology, scheduled to take place in the Federal Capital Territory next week.

Adimula explained, “One of the areas that we have been focusing on in recent years is developing technologies in the modular refinery sector. We are primarily a training institution, but given the state of the country today and the lack of technology among artisanal refiners, we have taken steps to develop concepts.”

He added, “We also assist in training these individuals so that their activities do not harm the environment. At the institute, we have constructed our own modular refinery. Now, the next step is to scale it up, finding ways to make it commercially viable.”

Adimula emphasized that PTI has already developed the required templates, drawings, and fabricated parts for the modular refinery. This infrastructure makes it easier to train individuals in the various aspects of the refining process they will encounter in the field.

He noted that many of the existing artisanal refiners lack proper knowledge of the refining process and tend to engage in environmentally harmful practices. PTI’s approach involves equipping them with the necessary skills to contribute meaningfully to the economy.

Adimula clarified that while the PTI’s modular refinery may not be as extensive as facilities like the Dangote refinery in Lekki, Lagos, its primary focus is to advance technologies in the modular refinery space and support training and development in the industry.

PTI Might Be Upgraded Before Buhari’s Departure From Office – Committee

The Petroleum Training Institute in Effurun, Delta State, may be renovated to train and develop local technology to handle the oil and gas business before the current Buhari administration leaves the nation.

Mrs Asmau Shehu Adaji, the chairman of the PTI Repositioning Committee, made this known on Monday during the committee’s working visit to the Institute for a general assessment of the school’s training facilities.

Chief Timipre Sylva, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, has established the Repositioning Committee with the mandate to ensure PTI’s proper positioning and restructuring in accordance with international best practises.

PTI Collaborates With A Gas Company To Train Employees

Speaking during a meeting with the management team of PTI, the Repositioning Committee chairman noted that the team would conclude the assignment before the exit of the present Buhari administration in the country.
She said, “I’m glad that we’re here to assess the institute. We want to conclude this assignment before the end of this regime. From the principal’s comment, I’m happy for the zeal PTI has to reposition the Institute. Without your support, we can’t do it. We need a physical assessment of what we’ve been told for a proper repositioning”.
Speaking further, she said “We’re here as a committee set up to look at the positioning and restructuring of the academy and the main purpose for which we are here is assessment. This is part of our assignment. At least we need to physically inspect the Institute and see where they are now so that we can pass the information to the government. We’re here for two days.

“They’ve talked about some equipment that are obsolete and looking for funds. The main purpose is funding as you can see is that we want to restructure the academy to meet the first class in line with international best practices to be able to provide the manpower in the oil and gas industry especially now that the Act setting up PTI has been approved and much is expected in the act”.
Earlier in a welcome address, the Principal and Chief Executive of PTI, Dr. Henry Adimula lauded the visiting Repositioning Committee noting that “the physical inspection would enable the team to see the suitability and also see areas where the government may need to reposition the Institute as the training hub for the oil and gas industry in Nigeria and the entire Africa region”.

Adimula described the assessment visit as the final drive to achieve the aim of repositioning adding that “it is not impossible that in the few months left in this administration, we would achieve the desired goals.”

According to him, it is the desire of the committee to make sure that this is speedily achieved.

PTI Collaborates With A Gas Company To Train Employees

The Petroleum Training Institute in Effurun, Delta State, has joined forces with TechnipFMC, a multinational offshore oil and gas corporation, in its efforts to create local content and people.

Some PTI academic employees attended the course on subsea system operations, which began on Friday at the Institute’s campus and was led by TechnipFMC.

Subsea engineering is a multidisciplinary discipline that is in charge of the design, construction, installation, and operation of offshore oil and gas fields as well as offshore wind farms.
According to ANAEDOONLINE.NG, the personnel training was designed to explore all of the major components of processes, technologies, and systems involved in subsea oil and gas production, as well as to improve the Institute’s staff’s skills.

Addressing participants while declaring open the training programme, the Principal and Chief Executive of PTI, Dr. Henry Adimula, noted that the training was aimed at improving and upscalling the staff skills to enable them participate in offshore business activities of the oil and gas industry.

“As you are aware, most activities in the upstream section of the oil sector are now moving offshore and as service provider, you need to understand the technicalities and identify opportunities for the sector,” he stated.

The Principal who was represented by the Director of Science, Dr. Bamidele Oyetunde, assured that PTI will continue to retrain its workforce on the latest technologies needed for the sector.
He commended TechnipFMC for offering the training stating that PTI management is highly delighted in partnering with TechnipFMC.
Dr. Adimula also praised the efforts of the Institute’s Head of Linkages, Exchange & Partnerships Unit, Dr. Sarah Nwinee for ensuring the success of the training.
The General Manager, Capacity Building Division of the Nigerian Content Development Monitoring Board, Dr. Ama Ikuru, in his address, also charged the PTI staff to take the training seriously and make the best use of the programme to improve their skills and that of the Institute.
He said, “PTI is embarking on a very important journey. I am happy that this training is coming at this time. The world is going into subsea activities, hence the importance of this training. I want to appeal to the Training staff of PTI to pay rapt attention on this programme as we hope to send trainees to be trained by the Institute”.
Also speaking, the Country Manager, TechnipFMC, Tayo Akinkunmi, disclosed that the TechnipFMC’s global training programme is developed specially for everyone who is new to the subsea industry, or wants to have a deeper basic knowledge about the offshore operations and equipment used in the global subsea industry.

While commending PTI management for embarking on the training for its Training Staff, Akinkunmi stated that TechnipFMC being a global leader in energy, projects, technologies; systems and services, also provides clients with deep expertise across subsea and surface projects.
