The release of the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, has been officially confirmed by the Department of State Services (DSS). Dr. Peter Afunanya, the Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications at the DSS, made this announcement in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday.

In the statement, Afunanya confirmed that Abdulrasheed Bawa had been released on the night of Wednesday, October 25. However, the statement did not provide specific details regarding the circumstances of his release.

Abdulrasheed Bawa had been in DSS detention since June 14 after being suspended from his position as the Chairman of the EFCC by the Federal Government.

Kidnapped NTA Staff and Passengers Freed

In a recent development, Tom Tikyaa, a staff member of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), and 12 other passengers who were abducted while traveling on a Benue Links bus have regained their freedom. The 13 victims, along with the bus driver, were kidnapped last Sunday along the Otukpo – Ugbokolo road in Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State. The bus was en route to Makurdi from Onitsha in Anambra State when armed gunmen intercepted it and abducted the passengers, taking them to an unknown location.

According to reports, family sources of the freed victims have alleged that they collectively paid a ransom of N7.5 million to secure the release of their loved ones. However, the Secretary-General of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (Benue Links chapter), Comrade Gabriel Tachia, confirmed the victims’ release but stated that he was not aware of any ransom payment made for their freedom.

Kidnappings for ransom have unfortunately become a recurring issue in some parts of Nigeria, particularly along major highways. Victims, including travelers and residents, are often taken captive by criminal gangs, and their release is usually secured through negotiations and ransom payments.

The safe release of Tom Tikyaa and the other passengers is undoubtedly a relief for their families and a positive outcome amid ongoing security challenges in the region. However, it also highlights the need for sustained efforts by authorities to improve security and curb criminal activities to ensure the safety of citizens and travelers.

Hon Hercules Okoro, Imo Lawmaker Released On Bail

Hon. Hercules Okoro, Imo House of Assembly member, representing Ohaji/Egbema Constituency in Imo State was granted bail yesterday by an Owerri Magistrate Court.

On the first day this issue came up at the Court, the presiding judge D.V Okoroji, requested that the lawmaker be remanded in the office of Nigeria Correctional Service for assault on another house of assembly member, refusing him bail.

Hon. Hercules Okoro and four of his personal aides (Sunday Ambition, Cosmos Opara, Hillary Kingsley and Azim Reginald) were arrested on Friday 13th November 2020,and arraigned in court on an eight-count charge bordering on assault and breach of public peace.

The lawmaker was alleged to have charged at and assaulted the Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon Amara Iwuanyawnu at Government House, Owerri.

According to the prosecuting counsel, T. O. B. Okey, “the charges are punishable under the relevant criminal laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria applicable in Imo State”, after he claimed that the defendants hit his client with a machete and injured him in the shoulder, opposing the bail request put forth by defence lawyer, Calistus Osundu, arguing that “the high rate of violence in the state should be tamed irrespective of how highly placed the affected individual.”

The prosecution also accused Okoro of conspiring with the quartet to “attack, assault and cause serious injuries on number four citizen of the state, who represents Nwangele in the Assembly.”

But the defence counsel, Osundu, maintained that the charges were bailable.

His constituents had staged a peaceful protest in their constituency(Ohaji/Egbema) appealing the release of their lawmaker.
