The uncompleted Shopping Mall Project which was commenced during the administration of Former Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, has been riddled with several controversies; both from the angle of the Government and the host community Nnewi.
Nkwo Nnewi Triangle shopping mall which was allegedly awarded to an unnamed Chinese firm at the cost of 3 Billion Naira appears to have become an abandoned project.
In an interview session with Anaedoonline, Senator Onyeabo Obi who is the Chairman of Board of Trustees, Nzuko-Ora Nnewi bore his mind on the controversies arising from the shopping mall project.
He started by saying that Nkwo Nnewi Triangle which is situated at the heart of the town remains the communal land of Ndi Nnewi which is owned collectively by all the four quarters in Nnewi which includes Otolo, Uruagu, Umudim and Nnewichi and remains the meeting point for the people of Nnewi.
He frowned at how the state government during the administration of Governor Peter Obi forcefully took over the land without due process.
He also gave a breakdown of how some group of patriotic Nnewi indigenes led him to kick against the project and the manner at which the land was taken from the town.
While admitting that Nnewi is making progress as it concerns the case in court which has been for some years now, He also frowned at the conditions the Anambra State government gave in handing over the uncompleted shopping mall project to Nnewi.
He suggested that Nkwo Nnewi Triangle should have been used for projects like a conference centre or relaxation park with garden which will be more befitting than building a shopping mall.
