Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), issued a stern warning to defaulters of ground rent payment during a meeting with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) leadership in Abuja. Wike emphasized that his previous directives regarding ground rent payments were not empty threats, and that “something will surely happen.”
In September, the FCT Administration published the land titles of individuals, organizations, and agencies with outstanding ground rent payments. This publication served as a reminder to all land allottees within the FCT of their obligation, as stipulated in their Certificates of Occupancy (C of O), to pay their ground rent in advance, starting from January 1 of each year.
The FCTA also warned that any breach or failure to comply with the terms stated in the Rights of Occupancy could result in the revocation of the title. All allottees, property owners, and beneficiaries of the sale of Federal Government Houses in the FCT were advised to settle their outstanding ground rent payments to avoid losing their titles.

Minister Wike assured defaulters that he would act on his words at the end of the grace period. He emphasized that after giving the final notice, the law would be applied, potentially resulting in the revocation of plots.
Wike also highlighted the positive financial impact of removing the Administration from the Treasury Single Account, leading to significant savings in Internally Generated Revenue. Additionally, he declared that the era of abandoned projects in the FCT was over, indicating a renewed commitment to the development and management of the capital territory.
