Jigawa Government Closes Schools Due To Insecurity

The Jigawa State Government ordered the closure of all schools across the state on Wednesday.

Dr. Lawan Yusuf, the State Commissioner for Education, confirmed the news to reporters in Dutse.

According to him, the security threat was the main reason behind the closure of the school.

Yusuf said the schools were closed on Wednesday morning after the state received an intelligence report about possible attacks on schools across the country, particularly in border states.

He directed parents of students in boarding secondary schools to go and take their children.

Despite the directive by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) that people should go about their normal businesses in the southeast, roads, banks, markets were deserted on Friday in Anambra State.

The Anambra governorship poll holds tomorrow for Governor Willie Obiano whose tenure expires March 17, 2022.

IPOB had issued threats that the governorship election would not hold unless its leader Nnamdi Kanu was released.

The pro- Biafra agitators warned that it would lock down the zone from 5-10 November 2021.

But on Thursday evening, the group rescinded its decision, claiming that Igbo leaders and other stakeholders had intervened, while calling the residents to go about their normal activities

However, the fear already instilled in residents persisted as commercial vehicles deserted the roads, banks, markets, shops and schools did not open on Friday morning.

One of residents, who spoke with The Nation on anonymity, said: “Please, nobody wants to lose his or her life. That fear IPOB has created in Igbo land will take some time to leave the people

“Again, it might be a ploy to lure the people out to slaughter them. Personally, I don’t trust them and the way they operate. The security people who are telling people to come out, are they to be trusted?

Adamu Adamu, Minister of Education, has revealed that the Federal Government is considering greater security measures to ensure that cases of abduction are no longer recorded in the nation’s 110 unity colleges across the country.

He described part of the security measures being considered as “a complex and sophisticated communication architecture.”

The ministry’s Director of Press, Ben Goong, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja.

The statement quoted the minister as saying, “The safety of our children is a topmost priority to the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

On Monday 21st June 2021, Abubakar Gumi, an Islamic cleric, disclosed that there are about 100,000 armed bandits in the North-West alone.

Gumi in his statement said the bandits kidnapping school pupils are disappointed that he negotiated with them without the involvement of the Federal Government.

He further stated that until the government engaged with the herdsmen, no school could be safe.

The cleric disclosed these during an interview with Punch on efforts to rescue the kidnapped pupils of Tegina Islamic School, Niger State.

The bandits had demanded N200m from the victims’ parents, which was later reduced to N150m.

Gumi said despite efforts to get the pupils out, the bandits are adamant in their financial demand.

He said, “But we are trying to talk sense to them that these are just innocent schoolchildren. We don’t even have any idea of the condition of the children. We are just saying these are young children trying to study and they did nothing, so why are you trying to take dirty money from their families?

“This (kidnap of Islamic pupils) proves to the nation that the bandits are not indoctrinated, they are just looking for money and I think that this is a good prognosis.

They are not targeting a religion; they are not ideologues, which are difficult to deal with. We should not forget that they are not educated, formally or informally. They are just going about with cattle, and suddenly they found a lucrative way of finding money.

“But with good engagement, education and enticements like jobs and other things, they will leave this work. But we need a partner and we need the government to understand. Individuals like me alone cannot do it.

“All those we met (have stopped kidnapping), except for one of them who is kidnapping again, and he told us his reason, that he was neglected and he thought we had the mandate to negotiate. But when he realized that we did not have the mandate from anybody, he said he was going back to his business.

“So, the earlier we go into engaging them, the better. The ones who have agreed to lay down arms, you can engineer them to take care of the rest.”

Gumi said the Niger State Government had been making efforts to get the children released, adding that the state had limited resources.

He insisted that the government could not protect schools without first finding means to end banditry in the country.

“To secure schools, why not engage the bandits. Engage them; they are not many. You can count them with your fingers. How can you guard schools? It is not possible.

In the whole North-West, they may not be more than 100,000 bandits. And that is just a drop in the ocean. That is talking about those with weapons; because not all of them have weapons.

Ninety percent of those who have weapons use them to protect themselves against cattle rustlers. They are victims too. Aerial bombardments will only worsen the situation because when you start killing their children, you remember they also have our children,” he added.

Ugwuanyi Approves Installation Of Fire Extinguishers In Schools

In furtherance of his administration’s concerted efforts towards safety of lives and property in Enugu State, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has approved the installation of fire extinguishers in primary and secondary schools in the State.

The installation, according to the Enugu State Chief Fire Officer, Engr. Okwudiri Ohaa, will commence with 216 units of 6kg DCP fire extinguishers for 18 secondary schools cut across the six educational zones in the state.

The State Chief Fire Officer, who made the disclosure during the training workshop for staff of the Post Primary Schools Management Board (PPSMB) and students of College of Immaculate Conception (CIC), Enugu, explained that the governor approved the training of students as well as teaching and non-teaching staff of schools in demonstration of his proactive disposition to safety of lives and property.

Engr. Ohaa added that Gov. Ugwuanyi in keeping with his administration’s zero fire outbreak campaign has “distributed fire extinguishers of different forms and sizes to 24 major markets and 78 members of liquefied gas dealers association”.

He said that fire extinguishers were equally installed in the New State Secretariat buildings among other public places, stating that “this training programme which cut across markets, filling stations, industries, institutions has come to the turn of secondary schools”.

At the PPSMB’s headquarters in Enugu where the fire prevention training for the staff of the Board took place, the Permanent Secretary, Evangelist Dr. Favour Ugwuanyi, thanked Gov. Ugwuanyi for his unrelenting efforts in ensuring safety of lives and property in the state.

She noted that the vision of the governor to extend fire prevention enlightenment campaign to schools was unprecedented and a great step towards safeguarding the lives and property of students and staff of educational institutions in Enugu State, stressing: “Since I was born I had never been a party to where the issue of fire prevention was being taught”.

The PPSMB Permanent Secretary revealed that 294 secondary schools will benefit from the training, pointing out that the governor’s transformation agenda in the fire sector has reduced the negative effects of fire outbreak to the barest minimum in the state.

Speaking after the training of the students of CIC, Enugu, the school principal, Rev. Fr. Hilary Mgbodile, expressed delight at the demonstration of transparent and proactive stewardship by Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration.

The Principal commended the state government for packaging the programme to enlighten the public especially the school children and staff on fire safety and prevention, noting that “this issue of fire outbreak was a source frustration to many schools”.

According to him, “Personally, I have learnt a lot from this and you could see the reactions from the students especially when you went practical.

“So I want to salute the initiative and salute our governor (Ugwuanyi) for sponsoring this kind of life-saving project. It is really something worthwhile and I thank all who have participated. We are so much grateful”.

The crisis over hijab (veil) wearing in Christian grant-aided mission schools took a violent turn Monday in Ilorin, Kwara state capital.

Scores of hoodlums allegedly vandalised churches, shops and schools in Sabo-Oke, Muritala Mohammed way and other areas of the metropolis.

Other places affected include Post Office, Surulere and Maraba where churches and Christian schools are located.

It took combined efforts of officers and men of the Kwara State Police Command, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigeria Army to prevent the break down of law and order.

This tense situation sent fears and apprehension down the spines of residents of the areas.

The hoodlums allegedly brandished machetes, cutlasses, bottles and other dangerous weapons, while marching through some roads in the metropolis.

It was also gathered some of them wore masks apparently to cover their identity.

Though the gate of the Cherubim and Seraphim College Sabo Oke Ilorin was securely locked, the hoodlums hauled stones and other dangerous missiles into the premises even with the presence of military operatives stationed at the entrance gate of the school.

The violence also spread to St. Barnabas LGEA primary school, Murtala Muhammad way, Ilorin and some churches in the area.

He said that normalcy had since returned to schools and business communities in the metropolis.

Lagos State Schools Resume Amid COVID-19 Second Wave

The federal government fixed today January 18 for the reopening of schools across the country, even as it continues to deal with the second wave of COVID-19.

The Lagos State Ministry of Education Sunday issued a statement on the plan to monitor resumption and compliance with COVID-19 protocols.

Director of Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Education, Kayode Abayomi, has already said the Commissioner of Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, will visit schools in Agege, Igando, Surulere and Ikeja.

“In a bid to monitor schools’ resumption and the COVID-19 protocol guidelines compliance, the Commissioner for Education will be visiting some schools around Agege Axis as early as 7.30 am tomorrow. Places like Surulere, Ikeja, Agege and Igando will be covered,” Abayomi said in a statement.

Although students of both public and private schools could be seen leaving home on Monday morning, most parents and guardians have chosen to keep their wards back.

There is fear and apprehension about the deadlier new strain of coronavirus. There is also concern on whether schools are well equipped to put mandatory protocols in place.

Some have even wondered why civil servants have been asked to stay home, while children resume at school.

Barring any closure as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the second term of the 2020/2021 academic session will run for 61 days for both public and private schools.

This is according to the revised calendar for the 2020/2021 academic session from the Office of the Education Quality Assurance (OEQA).

The second term will run from today to April 30.

Resumption for the third term has been scheduled for May 4, while the term is to terminate August 6.

Reps Propose Three-Month Postponement Of Schools Nationwide, Rejects January 18 Resumption

The House of Representatives has faulted the Federal Government for giving schools the go-ahead to resume on Monday despite the increasing cases of COVID-19.

The House said government officials did not consult the relevant committees of the National Assembly, contrary to their claim that all relevant stakeholders were consulted before arriving at January 18, 2021, resumption date.

It, therefore, demanded postponement of resumption for three months, where necessary safety measures weren’t put in place and compliance with protocols low.

FG Set To Postpone Jan 18 Schools Resumption Date

Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education and Services, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, disclosed these in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Saturday.

“They did not consult us; at least in my committee, nobody from the ministry spoke to me. I have been in Abuja. And I am not sure that they spoke to any of my members. They just don’t see us as part of the critical stakeholders,” he said.

Ihonvbere, in a statement he issued in Abuja on Saturday, on behalf of his committee, opposed the Monday resumption date.

The statement was titled “School resumption: Are we truly prepared?”

It read, “The Committee on Basic Education and Services, House of Representatives, has received with concern the decision of the Federal Government to reopen schools on January 18, 2021.

“We are particularly concerned that when the infection rates hovered around 500 and under, schools were closed; but now that it hovers well above 1,000 infections daily, schools are being reopened. The consensus was reached at a meeting between the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu and Commissioners of Education in Abuja.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Arc. Sonny Echono, who confirmed this to THE NATION, said: “We have had extensive discussions with state governors, proprietors of schools, labour /staff unions and students’ representatives. And the consensus is that we should reopen all schools.

“But the reopening of schools will be in compliance with COVID-19 protocols, especially strict adherence to non-pharmaceutical procedures.”
