EFCC Arrests Nine Suspected Internet Fraudsters in Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended nine individuals suspected of being involved in internet fraud. The arrests occurred on Monday in the Wuye area of Abuja following an intelligence-led operation conducted by the Commission’s Abuja Zonal Directorate.

In a statement posted on Tuesday via X, the EFCC announced, “Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Abuja Zonal Directorate, have arrested nine suspected internet fraudsters. They were arrested on Monday, 29 July 2024, at Wuye axis of Abuja following credible intelligence on their suspected involvement in internet-related fraud.”

During the operation, several items were seized from the suspects, including 19 phones, one car, four laptops, and one iPad. The EFCC stated its intention to pursue legal action against the suspects, confirming, “The suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”

UPDATE: Food Seized By Customs To Be Sold To Local Market

Food seized by the commission should be sold back to the local markets so that Nigerians can resell it, according to the Nigeria Customs Service.

Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller General of the Service, stated that this is in accordance to the instruction issued by the government led by Chief Bola Tinubu.

This was said by the head of customs on Tuesday during the sectoral discussion series on the House of Representatives floor, which was also attended by Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security.

Mr. Adeniyi claims that Bola Tinubu has ordered food items manufactured in Nigeria that are confiscated at the country’s land borders to be distributed directly to disadvantaged Nigerians in an effort to reduce the issue of hunger in the nation.

He said, “Tinubu has directed that we sell directly to needy Nigerians food items produced locally but which were seized. This is one of the ways to address hunger and food scarcity we are facing. We have started this in Lagos.

“Also, the President has also directed that imported food items seized by the Nigeria Customs Service should be sold back to the local markets for resale to Nigerians”

UPDATE: Customs To Distribute Seized Food Items To Nigerians

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has revealed intentions to give away food goods that have been seized to Nigerians in light of the severe hardship that the country is now experiencing.

According to Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Comptroller General of Customs, the food items will be given upon their certification as fit for human consumption.

Tuesday’s announcement from Customs National Public Relations Officer Abdullahi Maiwada saw Adeniyi reiterate his dedication to pushing President Bola Tinubu’s agenda for food security.

“Furthermore, to alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerians and improve access to essential food items, the Nigeria Customs Service will facilitate the direct disposal of food items forfeited to the Federal Government.

“These items will be certified fit for consumption by relevant agencies and made available to ordinary Nigerians nationwide through equitable distribution in our Areas of Operations,” he said.

The statement, however, did not disclose when the planned distribution will commence.
