Senate President Godswill Akpabio named eight legislators as majority and minority leaders for the 10th Senate today.

The majority leaders are members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while the minority leaders are members of various opposition groups.

The announcement of the major officers has allayed concerns about a potential conflict of interest between parliamentarians close to the President and those running on their own.

Majority leaders

1. Opeyemi Bamidele – Senate Majority Leader (Ekiti Central, APC)

Defection: Abaribe, Abdullahi Officially Resign As Senate Minority, Majority Leaders Respectively

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, the two Senate Leaders, formally resigned from their seats in the National Assembly’s upper house on Tuesday.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, Abaribe stepped down as Senate Minority Leader, and Abdullahi stepped down as Senate Majority Leader.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, read their resignation letters during plenary.

Following their defection from their respective political parties as a result of the results of the primaries in which they contested and lost, both parliamentarians resigned from their roles as main officials.

2023: Sen Abaribe Dumps PDP, Resigns As Senate Minority Leader

While Abaribe switched from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abdullahi defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP.

Reading the letter, “Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe decamped from the PDP to APGA. He also has resigned his position as Minority Leader of this chamber. With this, the position of the Minority Leader is vacant for the PDP to fill.

“I wish our dear friend, Senator Abaribe, very successful membership of his new party. Now, we have APGA represented in the Senate in the person of Senator Abaribe just like YPP.”

Also, Abdullahi in his letter said he dumped the APC because he didn’t get justice.

“Politics is local. I can’t continue to work for the government at the centre while my people are wallowing in abject poverty.

“After failing to get justice in APC, I have moved to the PDP,” Senator Abdullahi said.

Date Set For Trump’s Impeachment Trial

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has announced Feb. 8 as Trump’s second impeachment trial date on charges that he incited the “awful” attack on the U.S Capitol that left a police officer and four others dead earlier this month.

According to Schumer, who replaced Mitch McConnell as Senate leader this week after the Democratic party gained majority seats following the Georgia Senate runoffs early this month, the House will formally transmit the article of impeachment against Trump next week Monday.

Senators will then be sworn in for the trial on Tuesday before the chamber puts the high-stakes matter on hold until the week of Feb. 8, Schumer said.

In the main time, the Senate will work to confirm President Biden’s various cabinet nominees and pass the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package proposed by the new commander-in-chief, Schumer added.

“The Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol incited by Donald J. Trump was a day none of us will ever forget,” Schumer said on the Senate floor.
“We all want to put this awful chapter in our nation’s history behind us, but healing and unity will only come if there is truth and accountability, and that is what this trial will provide.”

Schumer laid out the schedule after negotiations with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).
McConnell initially proposed a Feb. 22 start date for Trump’s trial to allow his legal team prepare well for the trial.
Trump, hasn’t been seen in public since he left the White House before Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday.

Trump Impeached For The Second Time For ‘Inciting’ Us Capitol Riot

The Senate can vote to bar him from ever holding or running for public office again if it first convicts him of the impeachment article charging him with “incitement of insurrection.”

Conviction requires a two-thirds majority vote, meaning at least 17 Republican senators need to join the 50 Democrats to vote before Trump can be convicted.
Trump is the only president in American history to be impeached twice. Trump is also the only president to face an impeachment trial after he’s out of office.
The Senate has never voted to convict a president before, so Trump could make history again at his forthcoming trial.
