Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), has cautioned Nigerians who are thinking of moving abroad—a practise known as “japa”—to avoid doing so without the necessary paperwork.
When she visited a shelter in Brampton, Canada, she disclosed this.
Dabiri-Erewa emphasised that in order to prevent any “unpleasant consequences,” it is crucial to go lawfully and with the appropriate paperwork.

Dabiri-Erewa expressed sorrow for the Nigerians she visited at the shelter in a statement posted on Thursday by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the director of the commission’s media, public relations, and protocols unit.
She pleaded with people who are seeking asylum without the necessary paperwork to think again, pointing out that conditions are getting harder in many nations.
Dabiri-Erewa emphasised the dangers of trying to immigrate without following the correct legal procedures, saying, “Most of the time, it is just not worth it.”
