Umar Farouk, the National Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), has stated that only Nigerians can prevent his party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from winning the 2023 elections.
On Thursday, he appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today. When asked what could prevent Obi from becoming Nigeria’s president in 2023, Farouk responded, “That is Nigerians’ docility in not selecting good leaders.” If Nigerians believe that they want to maintain the old order, that they do not want a good leader, a leader who will salvage the situation, it is up to them.”
Farouk insisted that the party will win because of the momentum of the Obidients, as Obi followers are known in the country, but insisted that the Nigerian people must decide that they are tired of the old order.

Concerning the party’s crisis in Ogun State, Farouk claimed that some members of the party had compromised and allowed themselves to be infiltrated by outsiders.
He stated that the petition from an Ogun State chapter member to the National Chairman alleging financial mismanagement is not out of place, since there have been many such complaints in other parties as well.
The Labour Party National Secretary further stated that the Ogun chapter of the party violated the party’s constitution by purportedly suspending the Director General of the presidential campaign, Doyin Okupe, which resulted in the move being annulled at the national level.
While acknowledging that conflicts in a political party are natural, he counseled leaders with grievances to always trust the party’s internal conflict resolution procedure rather than coming public to disgrace himself and the party.
