Former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel is set to begin his new role as England’s head coach on January 1, backed by an 18-month contract with the Football Association. Tasked with leading England to victory at the 2026 World Cup across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, Tuchel aims to bring an end to England’s extended trophy drought on the world stage.
Stepping into the role after Gareth Southgate’s departure in July, interim coach Lee Carsley delivered a strong showing, achieving promotion in the Nations League with five wins out of six. Confident in England’s potential, Carsley expressed his belief that the squad has what it takes to finally secure World Cup glory, which has eluded England since 1966.
“We’ve got all the tools in place,” Carsley said. “Now it’s just about playing them in the right order.”
Carsley will hand over the reins following a 5-0 match against Ireland at Wembley, having successfully integrated eight new players into the squad during his brief tenure. He is optimistic that Tuchel, bolstered by this expanded pool of talent, will take England to new heights. “We’ve left the squad in great shape for Thomas. We’ll compile insights and observations from the players to provide him with a valuable starting point, then step back to support him,” Carsley added.
Returning to his role as England Under-21 manager, Carsley emphasized the challenge of managing a short time frame to build cohesion within the national team, given the level of talent and competition.
Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, a staple in recent tournaments, is optimistic about Tuchel’s arrival and believes the coach could guide England to long-awaited success. Reflecting on England’s recent struggles in major tournaments, Pickford noted the renewed sense of purpose among the squad. “There’s new energy and healthy competition for places,” Pickford said. “We want the best players for England at the right moment, and I believe we’re building toward that winning squad for the upcoming years.”
