TikTok has taken down over 2.1 million videos in Nigeria during the second quarter of 2024 for violating its community guidelines. This move is part of the platform’s continued efforts to enhance content moderation and ensure a safer experience for users.
According to TikTok’s **Community Guidelines Enforcement Report**, released on Tuesday, the removed content accounts for less than 1% of the total video uploads in Nigeria for the quarter. However, the company highlighted that 99.1% of the flagged videos were proactively removed before users could report them, with 90.7% being taken down within 24 hours. These actions reflect TikTok’s commitment to staying ahead of harmful content and creating a safer online environment for its Nigerian user base.
Globally, the video-sharing platform removed over 178 million videos in June 2024, with 144 million of these removals made through automated systems. TikTok’s proactive detection rate has now reached 98.2%, demonstrating the company’s improved efficiency in removing inappropriate content before it reaches users.
Owned by ByteDance, TikTok has reiterated its dedication to transparency and user safety by investing in technologies that enhance content moderation and mitigate potential risks. ByteDance, a private company founded by Chinese entrepreneurs, has its ownership divided among global institutional investors (60%), its founders (20%), and employees (20%).
